Enter the Nuclear Nutmen
There are seven nuclear reactors in Belgium, four in Flanders, at Doel, and three in Wallonie, at Thange. They produce a total of 5,800 MW, which is 56% of Belgium's total electrical production. In 2003 the first government of Guy Verhofstadt, a coalition of (european) liberals, socialists and ecologists, decided to close two of the four reactors at Doel, and one at Thange, in 2015.
The second government of Guy Verhofstadt, a coalition which no longer including the ecolos, put together a study group which produced a report which envisioned maintaining all seven reactors in operation.
Now that the (european) liberals, Christian Democrats, and Flemish non-socialists have a majority and are forming a government, the decision of 2003 is completely reversed, in fact, the policy direction will be towards more nukes, with the obvious marketing that 4th Gen designs are "clean" and all this is goodness and coolness and a rational response to global warming.
Belgian politics are conducted across three lines: cleric vs anti-cleric, capital vs labor, and Vlams vs Walloon.
