Graph Theory for Generals

baghdad-map-areas2.jpg
Baghdad had no bridges until 1889, when the first bridge was built from wooden rafts. Called the Karara Bridge, it was built by (Ottoman) Governor Mustafa Asem Pasha on the site of the later Khurr Bridge, which was built during the (Ottoman) Governorship of Ata Pasha in 1898. The British took Baghdad in 1917, and promptly threw up an iron bridge to support the British occupying forces in the Atifiya area of the city. The successor to the British railroad bridge, the Sarafiya Bridge, was engaged with a truck transported explosive and dropped into the Tigris on April 14th. photo. This week the Old Diyala Bridge was engaged with a car transported explosive and holed, and the new Diyala Bridge was engaged with a truck transported explosive and also holed. The carrying capacity of each has been reduced to one lane, and heavy armor and compact convoys may no longer use these spans.

KoenigsbergBridges_901.gifThe acceptable narrative for domestic consumption is that operations that engage the mobility of the Occupation force within the capital are sectarian ethnic cleansing. I don't see it that way. Suppose the problem Euler was trying to solve wasn't whether or not one could walk around the city of Konigsberg in a way that would involve crossing each bridge exactly once, but which edges of the graph, when removed, produced the least choices for Occupation Force responsive mobility, and the greatest ability for the Resistance Forces to pre-position assets and create kill zones?

As late as the Governorship of Nameq Pasha, the wali of (Ottoman) Baghdad, the defense of Baghdad presumed the temporary dismantelment of its floating bridges.

How many RPGs and better anti-rotary-wing munitions do you think are in OpFor hands in Baghdad?
