Back out to the high desert...
Blame Chris Clarke...Once introduced to the Mojave, we now can't stay away. We've been planning our escape ever since we returned to the coast north of LA so that Eric could finish up his current job contract. He has one more job site visit, but not until the beginning of May, so we took the opportunity, packed up and bolted. Even as we headed up the Santa Clara river, I, the navigator, still had no idea where exactly we were heading. It wasn't until about 3pm today I decided upon Red Rock Canyon, 20 miles north of Mojave. I'm so very glad I did.
The first picture is the backdrop for our campsite; the second, looking out from our campsite at a lovely Joshua tree field, backlit by the some of the park's amazing geological features.
Note: The satellite dish is low to the ground and heavily weighted down - yes, it's wicked windy out here.

Red rock! Yeah, that's a nice campsite. I went there with some friends and acquaintances years back. Quite something, though I don't know how long I'd tarry. It's pretty desolate there, and somehow lacks the truly empty feel I want from places like that before staying for long
Wind, though, that it's got. It's even been windy up here in the bay area. I can imagine how it must be there.

Photo number two shows the visitor center in the left background. If you were to pan-swivel the camera's stand, whether tripod or biped, so that the visitor center was at the right edge of the photo, the photo would include the little hill mentioned in this post.

"There is a small bald hill behind us, a mound of white Pliocene sediment fair glowing bathed in moon."
I just said to Eric as I looked out our slide window - wow, wouldn't that hill be great for the kids to climb upon?

You know, that was one of the most beautiful posts you'd ever written. And, well, that kinda says a lot, knowing your writing. I'll take a photo for the blog - name it Zeke's hill. Let Indy run around it (maybe pee on it in camaraderie, seeing that we now know he too won't be with us for long.)
Next we head to Death Valley...need to find that bitter river of which you spoke.
