Rose Colored Lenses

The reportage by mid-afternoon Baghdad-time is nine Task Force Lightning personnel, six KIA, three wounded, and one explosion proximal to their vehicles, while conducting "combat operations" in Salah ad Din.

Explosively formed penetrators create a linear jet of molten metal, a portion of the energy is focused into the collapse of a metal conic lens into the linear jet, so from the facts thus far, unless the TFL personnel engaged by the OpFors were (a) lined up in the hypothetical EFP's jet path, or (b) in a vehicle engaged by the hypothetical EFP and killed (or wounded) by the EFP, or secondary explosions as the fuel and ammo in the vehicle cooked off, or (c) in two or more vehicles lined up as in (a) above, then the TFL personnel may not have been engaged by an EFP, nominally graced by the Administration with "Made In Tehran" markings. Rather, some other form of pre-positioned ordinance is more likely, such as a Claymore mine.

Also in today's Five O'Clock Follies is another four TFL personnel, three KIA, one wounded, and one explosion proximal to their vehicles, in unspecified operations in Diyala province. Again, multiple vehicles are engaged with effect, which is simply difficult to do with a single jet.

Every instance of US press I read with the AP copy contained within two graphs an association of EFPs with Iran, so the sales job is still more important for domestic consumption than facts.
