Cherokee Nation Constitutional Vote

I wrote about the issues earlier, the url is Nation and Race. This morning someone asked me to comment on the election.

I haven't read the results yet, so I've no idea how Chad Smith's proposal did, other than to hear that his campaign got the most votes yesterday. I would have voted against it, and I support the campaign of Stacy Leeds against Chad Smith.

People who want to write about it -- please use the comments.

Based on previous rulings by Judge Kennedy, and considering what happened to the Seminole when they did precisely the same thing, this whole trainwreck is headed for federal court. There's also a serious risk that the BIA will refuse to recognize the upcoming June tribal elections if the Freedmen are excluded, which will result in the cutoff of vital funding for healthcare, education and so forth. The end result, with the BIA or a federal judge acting as nanny, will be a further degradation of tribal sovereignty. In short, it's going to get worse. Maybe much worse.
And I like Judge Leeds, too. She tried to warn the Nation with her dissenting opinion pointing out that the anti-Freedmen petition drive was blatantly fraudulent.
