So, born in SF, reared in the suburbs, tiring of things, I went to Europe on indefinite hiatus after four years at Cal.

What brought me back? The weather. North of the Alps, winters are *grey*.

Around the end of the tech boom, wife gets a tenure-track offer, we move to Minnesota.

The landscape. Cold is well and good, but Minnesota is *flat*.

Even on a grey day with hail in which I lugged the pachypodium indoors lest it catch cold, I prefer it here.
