A third party challenge in 2008? How about the I Hate Brown People Party?
I was intrigued when I saw a teaser for Political Insider's recent post on Election 2008: A Six-Way Race? However, after reading it, I think author Scott Keyes misses out a the real third party threat: The anti-immigration candidate, whether it be poster-boy Tom Tancredo (R-CO) or someone with less name recognition, but equal ability to whip the anti-immigrant crowd into a mass of frothing, ranting bigotry. One only needs to spend a few minutes on rightwing talk radio, particularly the likes of Neal Boortz to realize they're not going to accept the nomination of what they view as pandering, traitorous, pro-amnesty Republicans like McCain.
It's funny how immigration has just fallen off the radar in the regular media and on most of the larger blogs; the exception being when the Swift plants were raided last month. So I guess it shouldn't be surprising how political analyst have let it slip of their radar as well. But I have no doubt that come Republican primary time, it will be a top issue for "grassroots" conservatives. The GOP created this monster - they'll be the ones to have to live with it come 2008.

It's a strange thing. I went to the borderlands this summer and put together a huge article on immigration-related environmental issues fro Earth Island Journal (excerpts available here and here) and not a single person commented. I got comments on an article about environmentalists using the word "rape" to signify mining and clearcutting, but not a thing on the third-rail issue of US environmentalism. Weird.
