Two senior Egyptian officials and a Rabbi with a frog on his shoulder walk into a bar in Washington, and the bartender says, "Hey, that's neat -- where did you get that?" And the frog says, "Brooklyn -- they've got lots of them there."
Thirteen months ago Joseph Braude wrote me, letting me know he had a piece in TNR on Egypt. I read his piece, then wrote him a note -- 500 words -- mostly on what I thought distracted from what I thought was his major thesis -- which through all the clutter I think was "vote Mubarak". The comic in Cairo just delivered his punch line -- that the United States can't leave Iraq or all hell will break loose. For an encore he said Shias in Arab states were more loyal to Iran than their own countries, What a hoot!
