Josh Marshall on Social Security Privatization. I think his posts helped to defeat Bush's privatization plan. His strategy of asking readers to contact legislators to see where they stood on privatization--and keeping track of what each one said on his blog--was brilliant! Now there is a record that can be used during the '06 elections!

All of the contenders are worthy and wonderful; and all of their stories are important. However, the destruction of Constitutional law, the establishment of an above-the-law Executive, and the use of that power to torture, is IMO the most important of all the important stories.

While it's tough to vote against Jane and Redd, especially on the series that rocketed them out of obscurity, Josh stepped into the breach on Social Security at the beginning of 2005, and probably did more to turn the tide on that issue than anyone. There are many ways to be a hero, and some are less obvious than others. Last year, Josh was a hero.

Katherine and Hilzoy at Obsidian Wings on the Graham Amendment
It was a heroic example of effective intellectual and political response to a moment of crisis for our legal system. The posts were written under intense time pressure, for practical use in countering the 'arguments' put forward by the Enablers -- yet much of the writing stands up well as writing.
I'm an activist. Writing that motivates and equips for action impresses me far more than writing for reflection, or recreation, or the many other purposes possible. This series, to me, exemplified the "highest and best use" to which blogs can be put.

eRiposte of The Left Coaster for Treasongate: The Niger Forgeries --
This is a really tough choice, but eRiposte of The Left Coaster is doing better research than ANY corporate media reporter.
All of the nominees are deserving, and it's tough not voting for TPM and FDL -- but this TLC series is a benchmark for in depth investigative journalism.

eRiposte for the Niger Forgeries (see especially the links in the Preface of the linked page -- e.g. the series on the SSCI).
Not to slight the other excellent entries (some of which, like Josh Marshall's series, have obviously had a far greater immediate political impact), but this is in a class of its own. eRiposte's series is quite simply the best work currently available, academic or otherwise, on its subject. It is a rich, exhaustively researched and meticulously rigorous treatment of the Bush Administration's claims about Iraq and uranium from Africa. Based entirely on the public record, it is doing the kind of careful and penetrating investigative work that the existing official reports (SSCI Phase I, Robb-Silberman, Butler, Taylor (British Intelligence and Security Committee) Report, Australian Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence Report) have manifestly failed to engage in. It is what SSCI Phase II should but almost certainly will not look like. It will be a valuable resource for researchers for years to come. I can't recommend it highly enough.

that said: eriposte's work is probably the most valuable, and the most eloquent. i love holden's dedication, and i'm really amazed and impressed with jane and redd's work this past year. i nod to JMM, but i've always known that SS wouldn't be there for me when i'm old; raygun made that a sureity. anyhoo- eriposte has correctly identified the story that is "the heart of the matter," and for that reason gets my vote.
