I am a huge fan and cast my vote for Confined Space, because Jordan has so thoroughly documented the deliberate dismantlement of worker protections under the Bush administration.
When those miners were trapped in West Virginia, I knew where to turn for the truth: Confined Space.
Because Jordan has never forgotten the plight of manual laborers, factory workers and the other blue-collar citizens treated as disposable in Bush's America, he is my hero.

Confined Space - this blog made workplace deaths and disease a scandal. It has changed reporting of the issue in the media, and has started a new debate in the US. Given the US is a world class workplace killer with laughable penalties for safety crimes - see the Sago mine explosion, for example - this is a crucial resource.

Today in Iraq: blowing Propaganda Central out of the water, day after day, by carefully gathering together the tip-of-the-iceberg information about the American occupation of Iraq that is on record in English. A tremendous public service.

I'm deleting this comment for two reasons:
(1) it isn't a vote,
and
(2) it contains text like this:
... In contrast, the enemy-- the Iraq insurgents-- are on a one way trip to Paradise, determined to take out as many Americans as possible before they meet their doom.
This profoundly misrepresents the Opfors, and while that kind of this is the rule of the day elsewhere, on Wampum it isn't. 1st Amendment claims will fail because (i) we're not a public whatever, see Duncan Black's (Atrios/Eschaton) periodical comments on the same theme, and (ii) we're an Abenaki site, under Abenaki jurisdiction, and we extend to the United States the same full-faith and credit it extends to Abenakis -- none.
It also reads as if it was written by a drunk. Daniel E. Teodoru's (Bronx VA Hospital (retired))prior writings (about 450) are here should anyone other than he care.
Follow-ups will be deleted, etc. ebw.

Its a tough choice as there are many excellent blogs up here but Confined Space is my vote. It uses this democratic media to get out the word on the issues of workers in this country, who, while they comprise the viewing audience, are essentially invisible in the corporate media. and it's info you can't find elsewhere.

Wow, so many blogs, so little time, but CONFINED SPACE rules because it is unique.
Posted by: Karen McMillan | March 25, 2006 08:12 AM
Confined Space's issue coverage is very well composed, with widely varied sources of citations and tons of content missed (or under-revealed) in other outlets.
The narrative tone is actually appropriately passionate, and the occasional leaps into diatribe and mean-spirited sarcasm, give the mix an entertaining tone.
The "Weekly Toll"'s simply quoted list of fatal workplace events represents a huge contribution, independent of all the rest of the commentary. I send callous OSHA-haters there to witness this testament to our national cumulative carelessness. Without even any effort for statistics, it provides compelling lessons. Readers find themselves recognizing where occupational danger really is, and how easily our country could avoid so much tragedy.

Confined Spaces is an unique blog that covers a subject that many folks in globoshpere should know and understand better. Workers in the United States die and get injured every day because of poor working conditions and intense pressure from employers to work very hard and fast. This is a country where money rules, and this blog recognizes it by reporting the awful consequences for average workers on a daily basis. If the tone of the blog is angry sometimes, it is because one has to be angry with the numerous unnecessary deaths and injuries that happen every day in the U.S.
I think that Confined Spaces deserves an award for covering the tragedy that goes on unabated in American workplaces. You do not need to cover Iraq to understand how the Bush administration hurts Americans. Read Confined Spaces and it'll become very clear to you why we need regime change at home.

Confined Space provides essential information about the often-unreported toll in
workplaces, usually in the USA. Jordan Barab connects the dots between what's
happening in Washington's governing circles -- where workers' health and safety are
rarely considered -- and the reality of going to work each day. He combines his knowledge about occupational health and safety with compassion, wit and sharp writing, providing a much-needed analysis and expose of what it costs workers to head out the door to a job each day. It's more than dying in trenches -- although he keeps counts these needless deaths too. It's about the health effects of lousy workplaces and bad bosses. It's about a system that finds it cheaper to kill or maim workers' bodies and minds than to provide decent working conditions and support their right to unionise and speak out. Jordan deserves the Koufax for keeping health and safety issues where they should be -- visible and out front.

I cast my vote for Confined Space, which exposes the scam behind the fairy tale of the invisible hand. The powers that be would like us to believe that the so-called free market does a superior job of protecting job safety and health than empowered workers, an informed public, and government regulation. It is Jordan's informative blog, not the hallowed major media (which seems more comfortable ignoring the first amendment than using it), that constantly reminds us that the price we pay for "drinking their kool-aid" is our safety and health.

Confined Space gets my vote. Why? Because worker health and safety issues need the kind of thorough detailed timely and aggressive advocacy coverage that Jordan provides. Additionally, this blog deserves an award because the mainstream media seldom covers worker issues - with even less coverage for worker health and safety. Keep up the great work Jordan.
