Jeffrey Lewis and Paul Kerr have defined what it is to produce an expert blog. Whether correcting the record on Iran's nuclear program, contributing to the head of steam that almost stopped the Bolton nomination by looking at the now-ambassador's real record of service, tripping up the State Department on India sanctions, or reminding us how funny such serious matters can actually be, Arms Control Wonk's model will inspire how experts in other fields approach blogging long into the future. Add the sweet Hexive re-design, and it even looks pretty. Way to go, fellas - while geography may be separating you, it's best for us all if you keep it up.
I am a huge fan and cast my vote for Confined Space, because Jordan has so thoroughly documented the deliberate dismantlement of worker protections under the Bush administration.
When those miners were trapped in West Virginia, I knew where to turn for the truth: Confined Space.
Because Jordan has never forgotten the plight of manual laborers, factory workers and the other blue-collar citizens treated as disposable in Bush's America, he is my hero.
They are all wonderful blogs, and I agree that
Confined Space should be among these finalists and
that Arms Control Wonk is extraordinarily good
and extraordinarily important.
My vote goes to Pharyngula, always a great blog,
but this year one which rose superbly to the
challenge created by the emeregence of ID into
the mainstream.
Informed Comment. Although I believe there are better bloggers and better writers in this category, Juan gets a boost from the deadly seriousness and immediacy of his subject matter. He's the only regular, reliable source of unbiased information for English speakers in an entire war zone. I can't think of too much that would be more important than that.
Effect Measure - not only for the excellent avian flu coverage but also for taking an uncompromising stand against those who don't care to understand that public health matters
Effect Measure - For all the reasons I went into public health - brilliant strategic thinking, transparency, tech saavy, street smarts, theoretical chops, and compassion. They don't just have rubber on the road; they're branded with tire tracks across the chest. I learn, I laugh, I weep - and somehow their snarky humor keeps me at the dinner table. We're blessed to have their company in this global trek.

Intelligent, articulate commentary on public health issues (especially avian flu) with a good measure of moron-bashing thrown in. Expert cursing at times. Tune in - you'll be glad you did.
Effect Measure. I so appreciate that you bring experience and intelligence, and the voice of the off the record comment to the unfolding story of avian influenza. You praise Helen Branswell repeatedly for her excellent reporting. That is how I feel about your postings. Many thanks.
Dark Wraith Forums-Gifted writer, breathtaking intellectual scope, highly engaging style, outstanding ability to make current economic and financial activity understandable to the average reader
I'd go farther even than Michael Roston in saying that the Arms Control Wonk blog shows us all what kind of resource the internet can be as we carry out necessary acts of intellectual self-defense.
No longer solely dependent on the over-simplified and often misleading material we find in our daily newspapers, we can turn to expert blogs like the ACW for a reality check on the 'hype' in which the MSM trades.
I don't think we've yet appreciated how imporant such alternative views will be as the global community addresses the next series of serious challenges.
Finally: Full Disclosure.
When I first googled across the ACW blog, I was surprised to learn people like Paul and Jeff were blogging about such 'abstruse' matters as missile defence. And doing it in such a well-informed and witty manner!
Speaking as a total non-expert and ordinary citizen, I have to say that their example helped lead me to start blogging about an issue I care about.
This is a category in which I am not an expert. Judging from the enthusiasm of the Pharyngula voters, I'm going to have to check that blog in the future. But for now I have to go with the one I know and love for its passion, its politics, and its sense of community --
Arms Control Wonk No other blog that has influenced the actual policy debate as much as it has. Witty commentary is nice, but this blog far outshines the rest in pure expertise.
Full disclosure - having guest blogged there a few times, I am continually impressed by the amount and quality of info it produces, knowing what effort I put into the very few blogs I did.
Effect Measure. Even in this fine company, it stands out for its combination of deep knowledge, equally deep political understanding, the ability to communicate to non-specialists and - most impressively - to get through to non-adherents (politically). Which is to say it truly educates, in all the best senses. And on matters that may soon determine whether we're around to fight any of our other battles.
firedoglake - love the analysis and writing, but can't resist
the catty attitude!!! Their legal coverage, particularly
Traitorgate, is really wonderful, particularly if you don't
happen to be an attorney.
Firedoglake rocks.....Reddhedd, former prosecutor and Jane, who knows about criminal psychology (Natural Born Killers, Killer Instinct), perfect to cover/uncover all the ongoing criminal conspiracies in D.C.
Effect Measure
very difficult to decide, some outstanding blogs in this category, although i'm not so sure the field of expertise is supposed to be for some of them (not an insult, some of my favorites).
Definitely Effect Measure. In a country where public health is treated like a second class citizen, we need Effect Measure to constantly remind us of its value.
Effect Measure is one of my first stops online every day for news, insight and commentary. Balanced and thoughtful, it is a site I would not want to do without. How the Reveres keep it coming is no small miracle...
Effect Measure
If we need an alarm about a possibly imminent danger, or simply knowledge about an obscure subject, Effect Measure is how it should be done; with wit, deep knowledge and total situational awareness.

I vote for the Arms Control Wonk.
If there's a higher form of praise, I'd offer it.

This is a category in which I am not an expert. Judging from the enthusiasm of the Pharyngula voters, I'm going to have to check that blog in the future. But for now I have to go with the one I know and love for its passion, its politics, and its sense of community --
