2005 Koufax Awards -- The Polls Are Open
(Bumping to the top of the page until voting is over)
It is time to vote. Before doing so, please allow me to make a short comment about the awards and explain the procedure.
First, the comment. From our point of view, the important work of the awards is mostly complete. We view the nominating process and the posting of links to all the nominated blogs, posts, and series as the core of the awards. If the idea is to build community and honor people who have provided free information, enlightenment, and entertainment over an entire year (and it is), that job is mostly done.
The winning and losing part is completely secondary. After all, it is not really possible to determine who is MOST deserving of wider recognition. There is just no metric to apply. It is quite possible to make a large list of lefty bloggers who deserve greater recognition. That we have done. The same analysis applies to the other categories as well.
Congratulations to all those who received nominations. You have been recognized by your readers and peers for all of your great work. Providing the means to express our thanks is the central point of the Koufax Awards. Please try to take the remainder of the process in that spirit. The real winners are the readers, the lefty blogging community, and all nominees. The only losers are those who take the awards too seriously.
As for the procedures moving forward, I have opened comments on all of the nominating posts. I will leave them open for a few days of voting. Once we close them again, MB and I will tally the votes in each category to arrive at a list of 6-10 semi-finalists in each category. We will post those lists for final voting.
Please vote once for one nominee in each category. Dip your thumb in purple ink after you vote. Eric is in charge is ballot security and he is very good at it. Remember, we have your IP addresses. If you try to game the system, we will send your IP address to Bill O'Reilly and you will be receiving a visit from Fox News Security.
You may vote by comment or email. Email addresses are on the sidebar to your right. You may leave a comment here or at any of the nominating posts. The nominating posts provide a list of nominees for each category. Here they are:
Best Blog (non-pro)
Best Commenter
Best Single Issue
Best Series
Best Blog (pro/sponsor)
Best Expert Blog
Most Humorous Blog
Most Humorous Post
Best Post
Best Group Blog
Best Blog Community
Best Writing

Please vote, be nice, and have fun.

Is this irony, or what? You haven't enabled comments in the "Nominations For Best Commenter" thread.

Dwight -- looks like the Best Commenter page needs some attention. I can't find a way to post comments/my vote.
Posted by: helmut | March 4, 2006 01:30 PM
I tried to nominate The Fat Lady Sings for Best Commenter, but comments are not enabled, so I'll put that vote here.
TFLS's "On the Relative Death of a Child" is one of the best pieces that I have read.
Posted by: George | March 4, 2006 02:03 PM
I'll put my vote for best commenter here, too: it's for that rude, sarcastic and abrasive guy, Chris Clarke.
Posted by: PZ Myers | March 4, 2006 03:03 PM
Rude, sarcastic, abrasive, and really funny. Another vote for Chris Clarke!
Posted by: Michael Bérubé | March 4, 2006 03:33 PM
Chris Clarke. Specifically, Clarke at Berube.
Posted by: Roxanne | March 4, 2006 04:08 PM
Best Commenter: Eric Gordy.
If Murky Thoughts, Roxtar, Neddie Jingo, Cheryly of Whirled View, and Neil Shakespeare were nominees, they'd make this category more difficult for me.
Posted by: helmut | March 4, 2006 05:12 PM
All fixed now.
Posted by: dwight | March 4, 2006 06:10 PM
Chris Clarke for commenter.

Iblamethepatriarchy gets my vote for keeping us sane and smiling. Best new blog, I suppose, though wider recognition is deserved it will only bring the trolls and more work for Twisty.

I only voted in a coupla categories because it takes so long. You have to wait several minutes between comments because you have this no spam filter thing up. Is it possible to disable that for the voting process? You'd probably get a lot more votes. Who has time to sit and wait on the thing for a dozen different categories??

So many choices, so little time to read all of them.
The General's blog is serious. No more voting for subversive French faux humor. Stop this subtle tactic of using irony to mischaracterize what the General is about.

This is taking too damn long. These people deserve recognition, but at this rate it will take all night to vote. A cut and paste ballot for all the contests, returned via email would have been better.
If you're going to do this, it is worth doing right. I hope to see a better system for the second round of voting.
(BTW, if you need an email that wont fill up, let me know and I'll send you a few G-Mail accounts. They max out at like a kazillion gigs.)
Reply by MB - nothing is stopping you from voting via email - hundreds of people do. We've run the awards this way for four years - if you don't care for it, either find us a corporate sponsor or fork over a ton of cash yourself, as we're spending a least a thousand hours compiling noms and counting votes with the financial support of less than a hundred kind contributors. While this may take a few minutes for you to vote, it greatly reduces our work - just try and imagine parsing lists of votes from thousands of emails.
