2005 Koufax Awards: Best Series

I have been conducting the Koufax Awards for four years now. The nominations for Best Series this year are by far the most far ranging and difficult to compile I have yet encountered. The nominations run the full range of subjects. We have nominations about Iraq and Katrina, of course. Other nominations include SCOTUS, Latoyia Figueroa, Jeff Gannon, John Bolton, bird flu, Jamie Berube, Zarqawi, lobster sex and many, many other topics. Please read and enjoy.

I am still looking for URLs to Norbizness' Annotated Presidential Comments. If you can help please drop me a line or leave a comment most anywhere on the site and I will add it to the list. Congratulations to all the nominees. We have now posted the nominations for 14of the 15 categories. While MB and Eric bask in the Florida sun, I will attempt to compile the last category (Best Bog, unsponsored division) and post the nominations soon. Once that is posted, all the categories will be opened for voting.

Comments open only for corrections and errata please. No votes just yet.

No matter what movable type says, I posted this not MB. All the blame is mine alone.

How on Earth will people decide how to vote. There's so much good stuff here.

double_curve.gif

Yes, the truth is that trying to decide on a "best series" or a "best post" or even a "best blog" is a fool's errand. It just can not be done by any objective metric. There are at least 6 nominations in this category that I think are best in their own way.

I am just glad that the decision is not up to me.

double_curve.gif

The best way to access it is by using this category. The core of the "series as a series" was actually in 2004 during the campaign season, though.

--- thanks very much. I added it to the list. It was the last URL of the hundreds I needed. I do not know why it was so hard for me to find. Dwight

double_curve.gif

Wow - I am absolutely overwhelmed! Thanks so much. And I agree about how wonderful the work is. I am really enjoying reading everything.

I noticed the link for my nomination takes whoever's interested away from my blog. I have gathered everything together here in one place. Could you please update the link so people interested in reading my work will have an easier time of it?

Thank you - I cannot tell you how much this all means to me!

--- I added the direct link. I hope that helps. Dwight

double_curve.gif

This may be a better link for my series than the Technorati Search: http://sciencepolitics.blogspot.com/2006/03/looking-for-politics-on-science-and.html

-- I added the link.

Dwight

double_curve.gif

Among the missing: I nominated AdvisorJim, Confessions of a Former Dittohead, DailyKos, Carnacki, Got A Happy Story, DailyKos, and *me* (and so I don't feel overly self-promotional, a couple of other people did too) for Saturday Morning Garden Blogging, DailyKos.

So it's easier to find, I posted these in the December 17 nomination thread.

double_curve.gif

Same boat as coturnix... the permalink for my "Lying for Jesus" series is thus:

http://pooflingers.blogspot.com/2005/08/hovind-files-lying-for-jesus.html

Thanks.

-- I added the link. Dwight

double_curve.gif

Raybin at MLW, not MLF.

: )

fixed now; sorry. Why didn't spellchecker catch that? :> Dwight

double_curve.gif

Any chance I can consolidate my two nominations into one, for general Judy Miller obsession? I'd add this post:

http://thenexthurrah.typepad.com/the_next_hurrah/2005/11/what_libby_want.html

And this one:

http://thenexthurrah.typepad.com/the_next_hurrah/2005/10/sweet_judy_blew.html

And this one:

http://thenexthurrah.typepad.com/the_next_hurrah/2005/07/is_this_judy_mi.html

And call it a day.

If I were so allowed.

---- Can Do. I will make the changes right now. Dwight

In a world dominated by the products of invertebrate copulation, it's a crying shame that this issue receives so little attention in the blogosphere.

PZ Myers for his series on sex. Invertebrate sex that is. Lobster sex Octopus sex Spider Kama Sutra Tentacle sex Tentacle sex, part deux, and Worm porn

double_curve.gif

I vote for The Fat Lady Sings. This series on Subic Bay was LOL funny and brought back memories from days long past as a West Pac sailor.

double_curve.gif

Scott Lemieux of Lawyers, Guns, and Money for his Supreme Court coverage

double_curve.gif

If a person votes for "PZ Myers for his series on sex," and only a regular expression vote counter sees it, does it make a sound?

double_curve.gif

Hi,

I would like to cast my vote for Living the Scientific Life for Birds in the News.

Regards,
Scott Lewis

double_curve.gif

Birds in the News, Living the Scientific Life.
Dr. GrrlScientist should be duly compensated for that ongoing labor.

-Jamie

double_curve.gif

Jaime Berube's life and times by his father Michael Berube (and occassional comments from his mother and brother) are such good sharings.

double_curve.gif

Although I'm not certain it counts as a "series," I'll go with the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

double_curve.gif

This is IMPOSSIBLE. But, alas, I must:
David Brins of Contrary Brin for the series on Modernism and Enlightement: Parts 1-10, 11-15, and 16-17

double_curve.gif

A lot of good stuff here, but I'll go with Signs of the Apocalypse at The Reaction.

double_curve.gif

Pooflingers Anonymous for the "Lying for Jesus" series.

double_curve.gif

Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo on Social Security privatization.

double_curve.gif

Modesty be damned all to hell, I'm going to be a shamelessly arrogant prick and vote for my very own Civil War series. :-)

double_curve.gif

Berube on Jamie

double_curve.gif

firedoglake coverage of Plame

double_curve.gif

"The Fat Lady Sings" gets another vote!

double_curve.gif

I'll vote for Katherine and me on the GRaham Amendment. Also, would it be possible to change the links for our torture and rendition stuff? The ones you have are sort of broken -- they lead to all kinds of off posts on haiku and stuff. (Thanks to Gray Farber for pointing this out to me.) Better ones are:

Torture: http://obsidianwings.blogs.com/obsidian_wings/torture_and_detention/index.html

Rendition: http://obsidianwings.blogs.com/obsidian_wings/maher_arar/index.html

Thanks for all your work.

double_curve.gif

RubDMC for the incomparable Iraq War Grief Series on MLW's front page, daily.

DAILY, man. Dude is COMMITTED.

double_curve.gif

The Talking Dog is always insightful, and
his interviews with detainees' lawyers have
caused a national outrage. Well, they're worth
reading, anyway.
Speaking of Guantanamo, the 2oth hijacker at Gitmo
was reportedly tortured with sleep deprivation,
dehydration, forced standing, sexual humiliation,
attack dogs and Christina Aguilera songs.
Those bastards.

double_curve.gif

Josh Marshall on Social Security

double_curve.gif

RubDMC Iraq War Grief Daily Witness

double_curve.gif

RubDMC's Iraq War Grief

double_curve.gif

RubDMC for Iraq War Grief Daily Witness appearing on the front page at MLW every day - incredible. This man knows how to support the troops and the rest of the world.

double_curve.gif

The Rude Pundit for his Christ Weary series

double_curve.gif

firedoglake on the Plame affair

double_curve.gif

Bill in Portland Maine at DKos for Cheers & Jeers

double_curve.gif

Um, in an act of very bad form and poor sportsmanship, I am writing in my own series on the nomination of Alberto Gonzales as Attorney General and his role as the architect of the Bush Torture Policy last December and January.

I know it was not nominated, but I think it was my best work.

double_curve.gif

RubDMC for Iraq War Grief Daily Witness. we must face this evil with our eyes open.

double_curve.gif

Scout Prime for coverage of New Orleans post Katrina

double_curve.gif

I give my vote to Norbizness for his Annotated Presidential Comments
Cheers,
Zach Jones

double_curve.gif

Pooflinger for the Hovind chronicles. That cost a lot of brain cells (for him, not me).

double_curve.gif

Darksyde's Science Friday.

double_curve.gif

And I thought I was strange for sitting longingly in the corner at sex parties with a bucket of squid:

PZ Myers for his series on sex. Invertebrate sex that is. Lobster sex Octopus sex Spider Kama Sutra Tentacle sex Tentacle sex, part deux, and Worm porn

double_curve.gif

Ezra Klein on health care.

double_curve.gif

Michael Berube for his posts about his son, Jamie

double_curve.gif

Americablog for their work on Gannon/Guckert

double_curve.gif

I shall continue the trend and vote for myself - The Fat Lady Sings!

double_curve.gif

This is the only category in which I will vote for myself (I will have ample opportunity to vote for others in the finals), so: Science And Politics on 'Understanding America'.

double_curve.gif

World O'Crap's Ultimate Wingnut Challenge is to reality series and partisan morons what The O'Reilly Factor is to falafels and...partisan morons...Simply one of the best, most incisive, and utterly hilarious flensings of the Right Wing Blogosphere seen in 2005.

double_curve.gif

There they are, right under each other: Firedoglake for coverage of the Plame matter, and First Draft for Holden's Obsession with the Gaggle. Love both of those ongoing bits. Now, which to pick? And the winner is...

Firedoglake for their incredible efforts on Plame.

double_curve.gif

Blogenlust's coverage of the endless list of Zarqawi lieutenants and al-Qa'ida number threes

double_curve.gif

Pharyngula's invertebrate sex series!

double_curve.gif

I'm voting for Jamie.

Um, I mean Michael Bérubé's series on Jamie Bérubé.

double_curve.gif

Definitely Scott Lemieux of Lawyers, Guns, and Money for his Supreme Court coverage.

double_curve.gif

Michael Bérubé's post about Jamie

double_curve.gif

RubDMC My Left Wing

double_curve.gif

First Draft for Holden's Obsession

I couldn't live without it.

double_curve.gif

There we go!

Josh Marshall, social security privatization.

double_curve.gif

RubDMC for Iraq War Grief Daily Witness @ MLW

double_curve.gif

HorsesAss.org on FEMA's Mike Brown. It was this story that hastened Brownies ouster, saving untold lives, and set off the cronyism meme to boot. A big scoop for a local blog.

double_curve.gif

Jesus' General for Operation Yellow Elephant. Some day, some where, some chickenhawk wingnut is gonna break down and enlist-- and OYE will be there when it happens!

double_curve.gif

First Draft/Holden's obsession with the Gaggle

double_curve.gif

firedoglake

double_curve.gif

double_curve.gif

My darling blogmate, Holden, for his obsession with the gaggle. Holden was gaggling before it was cool.

A.

double_curve.gif

Firedoglake on the Plame Affair.

double_curve.gif

Bayprairie at Our Word for Reproductive Rights Week in Review because there is a war against women in this country and few others have led the charge against this war like Bayprairie has. Moiv should have been nominated for the same reasons and because she fights the good fight every single day. We couldn't be in better hands than in these two womens.

double_curve.gif

SusanG for the Gannon/Guckert series.

double_curve.gif

Firedoglake for Plame coverage

double_curve.gif

First Draft for Holden's Obsession with the Gaggle

double_curve.gif

Pharyngula's Invertebrate Sex Series.

double_curve.gif

firedoglake - plame

double_curve.gif

firedoglake for Plame

double_curve.gif

PZ Meyers - Invertebrate Sex is all I can afford these days...

double_curve.gif

SusanG writing at DKos for her coverage of the Gannon/Guckert episode

In a way I wanted to vote for other nominees more but how could I?

This work is practically historical, and may be said to have driven one of the most interesting and strange, not yet fully explained, political stories around. This bizarre reality is sure to long be an interesting non-enigma and historical asterixe. Also proof of concept for open source reporting.

double_curve.gif

Firedoglake for coverage of the Plame matter

double_curve.gif

PZ Myers for all his unerring devotion to tentacle sex :-)

double_curve.gif

Republic of T.

double_curve.gif
