2005 Koufax Awards: Best Single Issue Blog
This category is for blogs that focus exclusively or almost exclusively on a single specific area such as politics, economics, law, science, etc. Many of the nominees overlap with Best Expert, as often, but not always, experts write on a single issue.

My bet is that PZ will win this category, and deservedly so. I'll vote, however, for Arms Control Wonk.

Bahgad Burning. Nothing brings home to us better what it is like to be receiving an invasion from our country than Riverbend does. All wars should have such a human face - then there would be far fewer wars.

I have to sat that this is tough for me because I love BB but Coalition for Darfur is closest to my heart so I vote for them again. Just because.

Hard categories lead to hard choices. The choice of the hardest blog to face goes to Baghdad Burning. I often avoid reading it because I keep fearing there will be a notice that Riverbend has been kidnapped, killed, detained by the military or one militia or another, or has been driven out of Iraq by the sectarian violence or our own. Of all the bloggers, she is one of those voting with her life, not just her heart and mind.
I know there are others whose fight is equally deserving, whether it's medical, legal, or social, but if you talk about "life or death situations," blogging from Iraq without having protection from any of the "authorities" has got to take the cake.
So Baghdad Burning it is.

Baghdad Burning. If only everybody in the USA had been reading her since the war began, we'd have risen up as a nation and forced our government to stop the war long ago, and do a good job of rebuilding what we've destroyed. She renders particular the ordinary humanity of the Iraqi people, shown here only as a bunch of categories, i.e. Sunni, Shia, insurgents, prisoners.

Today in Iraq - I've been going to this site for over a year. It has the most honest and clear reporting on the war. I've read commentary - rants - that were so personal and so vivid they will stay with me forever. I have thanked them many times for their work and have links some of the articles I find there to other sites. Without sites like Today in Iraq we would never see the real war.

Ex-Gay Watch. Easily the most unique blog of the list, and certainly underrated in its impact. Many of the paid ex-gay shills monitor this blog and take its reporting and exposes very seriously. The site has often been the first to blow the cover on a story, and its journalistic even-handedness is a major part of its power. May not be the most "fun" or "popular" blog as seen by the votes above, but arguably one of the most important.

Confined Space is the best single issue blog I know of. By offering detailed information on recent events in the world of workplace safety and health, as well as critical commentary on what is and what is not happening, Confined Space fills a big gap. One may not always agree with the opinions expressed, but in a time of one-party rule in the government and as unions are losing their influence, Confined Space helps to keep alive the debate about how best to protect workers. It also provides a bit of oversight of what the government is doing - and not doing - in this area.
