The Lies & Depraved Indifference of Republicans, by... me. That's right. I'm not ashamed.
EMBARRASSED, yeah.
Especially since Hunter's "Melting the Skin..." piece is destined and deserves to win this category.
But yeah, I'm voting for myself. Sue me, motherfuckers.

A ridiculously tough choice. If I had two votes, I'd have to give them to PZ's "The proper reverence due those who have gone before" and Matt Yglesias's "Patriotism and Nationalism." Given that I don't, and that PZ's post seems to be getting quite a few votes already, I'll give the nod to "Patriotism and Nationalism."

Reading all of these posts was a wonderful way to pass a Saturday night. There is some incredibly good stuff out there.
It's nearly impossible to pick just one, but ---
Digby, Genie in a Bottle, because of this paragraph which I've pretty much committed to memory now -
At this rather late stage in life, I'm realizing that the solid America I thought I knew may never have existed. Running very close, under the surface, was a frightened, somewhat hysterical culture that could lose its civilized moorings all at once. I had naively thought that there were some things that Americans would find unthinkable --- torture was one of them.

There is so much good stuff here and I can't claim I read it all, but this article is so simple, yet so poignant and evocative. You look at the little boy's face in the New Orleans Superdome, read Geiger's words and think "wow that could be my kid."
A wonderful piece of writing.

Some of the best posts of the year are here. My
favorite, amprather's tribute to his Grandfather,
Roman Edemskoi, and the almost miraculous response
that followed, is not. This can probably be found on
the dKos search engine, but as you can see, the story
is so engraved on my mind that I actually remember
his Grandfather's name by heart.
Obscenity by MSOC is one of the best posts ever.
Cries From the Lake of Fire by Hunter is too.
I came here to vote for BiPM "How wrong can you idiots
be?", but I've changed my mind at the last moment.
Vote: OBSCENITY by MSOC. Because she has a gift
for making you feel the truth on a visceral level.
And in a culture where we often ask "where's the
outrage?", she can make you actually feel outrage,
which makes her worth her weight in gold.

No contest. Billmon's "My Back Page." This is the post that helped define the attitudes of millions of liberals, including myself, towards the present political situation. It's chilling, it's sad, it's depressing, but all too often, it's just too true. Resigned as it is though, one can still feel the call to action that the message contains and that's why I feel that this is definitely the post of the year.

Creek Running North, Life and Death, including the comment thread, winner HANDS DOWN. This narrative acknowledges a blameless but often guilt-ridden population; family members of convicted murderers, who stumble alone in their secret psychological slums, who seriously need to talk, but never begin to shape their experience, out of legitimate fear that they will be sensationalized or otherwise socially stigmatized. There are many, many people whose lives are ruined by unchosen affiliation with murderers, this post can help people, it should be made available to psych services at federal prisons.

A clear description of the difference between spiritual or religious beliefs which demand moral courage of oneself, and those used only to make demands of other people's behavior.
