The Koufax Awards 2005: Best state and local blogs
This is a new category this year, so it was a little challenging to pull together. It is intended to honor blogs with a focus on happenings in a single state or single locality. In the spirit of community building, the basic tenet of the Koufax Awards, I excluded candidate blogs (we've done this in the past as well for other categories.) It took me a little longer than I thought to compile, as I'm feeling more obligated to do at least a cursory read of each nominee, so to make sure this category is appropriate, being a new one and all.
So here they are, the nominees for Best State and Local Blogs. As in the two previous categories, voting is not yet open. Take the opportunity to see what's going on outside your neighborhood.

Bluejersey.net is definitely the best. Congressmen post there. It covers the state like a blanket. They have some real respect in political circles. When they were arguing against Corzine appointing Menendez to his senate seat (after Corzine won the gubernatorial race), one of Menendez's staffers posted to Bluejersey.net to argue for him, which shows that the site is not only noticed, but is respected.

BluegrassReport.org for best State blog. Has caused a formerly retired Kentucky Democrat Congressman to come out of retirement after a term-limits departure. He will surely take back his House seat from Bush's French-Canadian transplanted wing nut. BluegrassReport is doing its bit to help take our country back one district at a time, even in Kentucky where it's REALLY slow going.

Thoughts from Kansas, for multiple reasons. For being truly thoughtful rather than polemic. For providing a progressive voice where it is needed most, and where it is hardest to find. For devoting a LOT of time (it shows) to the blog while maintaining a full time grad student course load.
Launching a successful progressive blog in a place like Berkley or Philadelphia is one thing (love ya, Kos and Duncan). Launching one in KANSAS takes a whole 'nother level of smarts, dedication and balls.

Surely you didn't mean for us to vote for only one, with a group as varied as this one? I have three tiers, depending on how long you want the finalist list to be. If any of these were local to me (down to the third tier), I'd be reading them every day. I looked at a couple of weeks of posts to judge local focus, posting frequency, value-added to news, and voice...
A:
Horse's ass -- not all local (WA), but mostly, and catchy, original, news and snark -- great!
grits for breakfast -- local (TX), niche (law/crime), and yet still fascinating
operation eden -- fantastic photo-journalism of the natural and human crisis that is/was Katrina; no professional outlet even came close
B:
bluejersey -- good local (NJ) news coverage, more than just scanning papers, engaging and informative
blue oregon -- mostly local (OR) political news and encouragement of activism
facing south -- regional blog attempting to make the South more progressive (or represent its progressives)
Hogg's blog -- very strong 1-man local (Greensboro, NC) blog with discussion of issues and events in more essayish style
bluemass group -- strong local (MA) blog with interviews and other original content
soapbox/Chicago -- local (Chicago) news, activism, commentary
bluegrass report -- mostly local (KY), doing hard work to track races statewide, etc.
C:
red state rebels -- good local (ID) commentary mixed with some national news and goofiness
greenespace -- local (Chapel Hill, NC) politics, news, and musings
firedup!missouri -- short takes on local (MO) politics; appears to have professionals behind it, but newsy
washblog -- good group blog (WA), mix of news, discussion, essays
soapbox/Colorado -- good local (CO) group blog, news et al.
gort 42 -- feisty local (western PA) blog, news and local events
[A Smoke-Filled Room -- local (PA) news, activism, politics -- but I'm not sure I can vote for my own blog...]

Horses Ass is the Best State and Local Blog. It's hard hitting, unvarnished content about Washington State politics is indespensible and a must read for anyone serious about the subject. I'm an absolute addict to HA and think it deserves a Koufax award.

Posted by: Noemie Maxwell | March 11, 2006 12:45 PM
Hands down, HorsesAss:
David Goldstein deserves tremendous credit for two major scoops in the last year. In one, he broke the local political story of the '05 campaign season when he reported on claims by family members of the Republican candidate for King County Executive (a major office in Washington state, since King County accounts for almost one-third of the state's voters) that the candidate was prone to raging tirades directed at women and had once even struck his mother in family dispute, and furthermore that he had vastly inflated his resume -- claims that had been deliberately ignored by the timid and provincial local press until David shamed them into covering it. (Disclosure: the victor in that race, King County Exec Ron SIms, is my boss, and I can attest to the fact that, Republican claims notwithstanding, he did it without our help). And second, in the immediate aftermath of Katrina he exposed Michael Brown's background as a horse judge, which obviously turned into a huge national story. Plus, the dude can sort of write, he's moderately funny in a profane sort of way, and, most importantly, he's an extremely natty dresser.

The Inside Dope... though he read the post for this where it says that voting hasn't begun and figured it must be true. (It STILL says that!) Hello? Anyone?
The Inside Dope has shaken things up and added a much needed dose of independence in local Dem politics in the important Quad City area of Illinois. His writing is sharp, incisive, and interesting with a large dose of humor thrown in to make it all easy to enjoy.
Despite a massive harrassment campaign, threats, and intimidation from our appointed state senator and his supporters, the Dope has held steady and opened a lot of people's eyes.
TID has weathered the storm and survived to the ripe old age (for blogs) of a year old, and has literally changed the political stage of the area and opened the door for other bloggers to jump in.
The Inside Dope is worthy of a Koufax and gets my wholehearted support.

The Inside Dope. I agree completely with the post above by QC Dem. The Dope's website has actually become one of my regular morning and evening resources for political news. The Dope appears to have developed a mastery of the local political scene, perhaps explaining his very quick rise in popularity and site visits. He has received some significant attention from office-holders themselves. Hands down, The Inside Dope gets my vote.
