Koufax 2005: Open thread

Here's a thread for Koufax related questions. Do not cast votes here - they will not be counted.

One point I would like to make. I have no problem adding nominations which I missed, but please do not ask me to remove posts unless it is your own blog, for whatever reason. The nomination threads were up for over a month - if someone was nominated inappropriately at that point and it was not addressed, it's not my position to check each and every blog. These awards are supposed to be fun, for me as well as for you all. It becomes very un-fun for me if I'm to start removing blogs from particular categories, and I'd rather spend my time putting together more posts, not explaining myself.

Remember, these awards are to build community. Let's all approach them with a generous spirit.

And speaking of which, we are still accepting donations to offset our running the awards, as we are short one laptop and the server hard-drives need replacing. Thanks in advance for any welcome contributions.

[Update 7:15 pm, Sunday: I've just finished the first 106 nomination links for Most Deserving of Wider Rec, and am only 2/3rds of the way through the first post. Thus, I'm updating this to please send take-out dinner funding for the kids and Eric - maybe even babysitting funds, as trying to hide in the attic away from kids has led to children gnawing on whatever is found in the pantry, legs of the furniture, the dog. Ack, just writing this, I burned the toasted cheese.]

[Update 8:58 am, Monday: Been up since 5am, and about 200 links now done in Wider Rec. Should hopefully have the completed post up later today, if all goes well and I don't throw our one functioning laptop against the wall the next time I have five nominations in a row with no linking urls or worse, "joe blows blog". Chocolate. Send chocolate.]

Update 5:42 am, Wednesday: This time of day seems the only time I can make significant progress (what, with four kiddos under 10), but it does take its toll. I should have at least one more nominations post finished today, and I'll try for another tomorrow. Contributions for childcare seem less and less like a joke right now.

We're now offering civicrm in drupal, joomla!, and standalone configurations, as well as MediaWiki, JSPWiki and Xwiki, as well as the blog standards: MovableType and WordPress. If you have an electoral candidate or issue campaign you'd like to have done by non-nonsense pros who've flesh in the game, or delight in web 2.0 tech, drop Eric a line.

Comments

Has the period for nominations ended?

Thanks.

double_curve.gif

Yes, Stacy. They were open for three weeks from mid-Dec to early Jan.

double_curve.gif

I'm confused... is voting open? Where do we voe for Best New Blog? Hmm?

'cause I've got one in mind.

: )

double_curve.gif

MaryScott,

I've only put up the nominees - I won't be opening comments or email voting for a few days, as I want to give people a chance to read through the 120 or so nominees.

double_curve.gif

MB -- thanks.

As for me, I don't need to read through the 120 nominees to know for whom I'll be voting in this particular category.

Biased and all that jazz, dontcha know.

: )

Can't hardly expect a gal NOT to vote for her own blog, now, can ya?

double_curve.gif

I clicked on your paid ad. Does that help?

double_curve.gif

Is there a snail mail addy that we can ship donations to? I've wondered about this before too. Cheers, 'VJ', ga.

double_curve.gif

Yes, VJ.

Our PO Box is:

211 Marginal Way, Box 311
Portland, ME 04101

I guess I should put that up on the sidebar as well ;-).

double_curve.gif

Hiya,

I've been checking out the new blog noms, and I'm honored to be in such good company. However, my blog, Aetiology, has since changed its address, moving to the new Scienceblogs.com site (http://scienceblogs.com/aetiology). Likewise for another nominee, Adventures in Ethics and Science (now at http://scienceblogs.com/ethicsandscience/). Is there any way to put in a "old site/new site" link? Sorry, I know it's trouble--I just don't want to confuse people.

Thanks!

double_curve.gif

Two of the nominated blogs have moved since their nomination - Aetiology has moved here, while Adventures in Ethics and Science has moved here. Both moves are part of the creation of ScienceBlogs.

double_curve.gif

I clicked on your paid ad. Does that help?

No. We charged a flat fee. We hope people will take an interest in the Radnofsky for U.S. Senate (Texas) campaign. Its a competitive campaign. That's why we took the campaign's ad.

double_curve.gif

Thanks for all the work you put into this. It must be hard for your eyes.
I'm going to send in some money on my payday which is on Friday. Not that this is to be viewed as an attempt at bribery. :)

double_curve.gif

Thanks so much for your work. One minor nit about my blog -- the link on the list (deserving of wider recognition) has the http:// part twice, so the link doesn't work.

In other words, it should be http://www.halfchangedworld.com/ rather than http://http://www.halfchangedworld.com/

double_curve.gif

fixed.

double_curve.gif

I just wanted to say thank you. I'm so bloody grateful to be included; I've been dancing for joy. I've already done a tour of every blog on your lists, and I'm fascinated and intrigued by every damn one. You said this was a way for us all to get to know one another better. Boy howdy are you right! It's a hoot, and I'm really having fun. I wish I could send you chocolate! Instead, let me send you a link for some marvelous chocolate - especially if you like a little spice in your life. They're called Cowgirl Chocolates - and my hubby's addicted to them.

Anyway - thanks again. And best wishes to everyone nominated!

double_curve.gif

So, when and where do we get to vote already????

double_curve.gif

You need to move these awards off your blog and onto a site of their own so they're easier to follow. Like this.
http://cba.myblahg.com

double_curve.gif

You're right, Robert - we should work our asses off 24/7 three months out of the year, come no where close to breaking even financially, with the small price being you have to wade through our other random musings. I assume that's what's bothering you, as we have plenty of bandwidth at this point, so loading shouldn't be slow.

The Koufaxes are part and parcel of Wampum. [rest of comment struck as I'm too tired and cranky]

double_curve.gif

M.B., thanks for all your hard work. And don't sweat the commenters like Robert. I once had a magazine reader tell me I ought to put all the ads in the same few pages so that he could avoid looking at them. If you'd segregated the Koufax stuff into another blog, I might not have read E's post on Inktomi, and I'm very glad I did.

And the delay in voting is a GREAT idea. Not being the kind of person that would vote for myself, it gives me a chance to see what some of the other nominees are doing.

double_curve.gif

MB--just FYI, one of my nominations for "Deserving of Wider Recognition" has moved here.

double_curve.gif

What's a blog to do around here to get noticed?

[what's a blog? ebw]

double_curve.gif

Being at this blogging thing longer than most, and thus having name recognition, street cred and/or an offensive moniker, TCF has nonetheless needed to temper his healthy ego when blog awards season arrives.

I learned from the music biz that it's best to operate just below the radar of success and notice, ideal for ensuring longevity and loyal lurkers.

Thanks for the shout out MB, as this may be TCF's shot at being the Susan Lucci of the Lefty blogsphere. But, it is sincerely an honor also to be recognized here along with some impressive bloggers I already call friends!

double_curve.gif

Thank you so much for including me in Best New Blog! Although my name is spelled wrong (it's Cornell, not Cordell) I have to say you have the best blog simply for joining people together; you are one of the most generous people on the blog planet!

I can't wait to read everyone's blog and look forward to winning back Congress in 2006.

(Would you please change my name from Cordell to "Cornell".
Thank you
xoxo luv,
Lydia

MB -- so, that PO Box, does it accept food stuffs?

The Fat Lady Sings -- oh, GREAT. MORE chocolate in my life.

True story: I seem to have developed, if not an outright allergy, a TERRIBLE sensitivity to chocolate. Over Christmas, as is my wont, I indulged my desires without limit -- and spent 3 weeks with a bizarrely swollen mouth. My lips resembled nothing so much as Angelina Jolie's after a whole day of shooting nothing but rough kissing scenes. Finally narrowed the culprit down to CHOCOLATE.

The greatest irony, for me, is that until the past few years, Iwas indifferent to chocolate.

So, I develop a predilection for the stuff... and it turns me into a blowfish.

double_curve.gif

Maryscott - chocolate's off my list too. I've developed a sensitivity to it, so no dice! I can have cocoa powder (in limited amounts), but no more Cadbury eggs at Easter for me any more. The hubby can indulge, though. That's why I mentioned Cowgirl Chocolates. They're made with Jalapenos - and my hubby is just nuts for the stuff.

And MB? Just filter out the ungrateful boobs. I know this takes up tons of your time and lots of effort. Can you perhaps delegate the compilation out to other bloggers? Maybe a cadre who would volunteer - people willing to not be eligible one year in order to help? I'd volunteer. I think this is important for all of us small bloggers. We don't want to write in a vacuum - we want people to interact with us, tell us what they think of our work. This Award you've created promotes traffic to otherwise unknown sites. I think that just rocks. Not all of us can contribute money - but I'd be willing to donate time.

double_curve.gif

MSOC - yes, POB accepts chocolate ;-) Sorry about the adverse reaction, but more for me, he he he!

TFLS - Unfortunately, it would probably mean much more work getting the data organized and farmed out than for me to just do it. Also, it's a bit complicated, as most decisions of what fits best where (particularly when the nominating post is not clear), and so some amount of consistency is probably a good thing. This is one reason we don't even spread it out among the three of us here at Wampum. It's also easier to blame just one person, me, for all the screw ups, past, present and future. But thank you much for the kind offer.

double_curve.gif

Hi MB,

Just to let you know, I was the original author of Agitprop from August 2004 to October 2005. Blogenfreude took over the site in October 2005 when I decided to change course in my blogging activities. My old archives from Agitprop are located here if you are interested.

Thanks,

Comandante Agi

"What's a blog have to do to get noticed?"

I kinda know how he feels. But no sour grapes here. There are some great blogs out there and you do a great job in finding 'most' of the best ones.
Now, where can I for my fave?

double_curve.gif

I don't have anything real to add -- other than the well earned thanks for running these awards every year. :)

double_curve.gif

Everyone at Wampum, I just wanted to thank you for hosting the Koufax Awards again this year. You're doing a great job, as you always do. I get the benefit of reading new blogs as the nominations come in. Too many good blogs to choose from.

Cheers!

double_curve.gif

Thanks for the nomination, whoever you are who nominated me, and thanks to the good people at Wampum for all the sleepless, chocolate-deprived nights they've spent laboring to flatter my vanity. (Seriously, thanks for the hard work. I donated what I could to the cause, but it wasn't much, you know, because I'm a graduate student. One day, when I'm a wealthy academic celebrity, I'll subsidize the whole affair.)

double_curve.gif

The broken URL is this:
http://sciencepolitics.blogspot.com/2005/01/perils-of-ideological-continua-and.html
(I posted it two comment after the broken one). Thanks.

double_curve.gif

I noticed a site missing from the "Best State and Local Blog" category -- Young Philly Politics. If memory serves, it was nominated for that category by Will Bunch of Attytood.

I join everyone else in thanking you for all of the time and effort you put into the Koufax awards each year.

double_curve.gif

Just wanted to say a proper thanks to you, MB, and to whatever kind soul nominated Waveflux. Good luck to all nominees!

double_curve.gif

This isn't a vote but I'd like to point out that http://firedoglake.blogspot.com is not eligible for a Best New Blog award since it's been around since November of '04.

[Are they listed? I learned that last week and thought I fixed it - MB.]

double_curve.gif

Wampum, many thanks for all of your hard work on these awards. I'll enjoy reading the blogs that you've brought to my attention.

double_curve.gif

Keep up the good work.

double_curve.gif

Is there any little graphic available which indicates that a site is a Koufax nominee?

Also, any page which explains what the Koufax Awards are, their history, etc.?

I've looked but not found one, and it would be helpful to have such a page when instructing readers who may not know (yet) about the awards.

Feel free to answer by e-mail

It's a great one.
