This is the hardest of the nomination posts to compile, one reason I chose to do it early this year - hopefully you'll all feel sorry enough for me that you'll send much Pinot Noir and pad thai (well, maybe not together - pad thai goes better with Singha, which I'm also amenable to - or to which I'm amenable.) Or you could just send cash, in large, untraceable denominations.
Below are just under 300 urls for blog most deserving of wider recognition. There were many more, but I do admit to utilizing a litmus test this year: Atrios, AmericaBlog and Firedoglake have quite the following already. Maybe this category can be reserved for the little guys. I won't share with you the exact, very elaborate formula I used, but I'll give you a hint: In order to make the cut, you had to have fewer links than say, us! Very scientific, I know. Also, you have to have at least ostensibly written on lefty politics. If your blog is solely (pun, pun) on your favorite style of Birks, we suggest you submit your site to the Bloggies or Weblog Awards.
Since I've spent all but a few hours of the past 24 (yes, how dare I actually sleep during the 'Faxes), I'm sure that I must have missed a few nominations. I've posted an Open Thread, which will remain at the top throughout the first round of the awards.
Just as in the Best New Blog, I'm not opening comments or accepting votes via email at this time. There are a lot of really good blogs here, guys. Spend some time getting to know them, and be ready to make an informed decision come voting time.
As an aside, I don't generally nominate blogs myself, and this year I won't as well, as my suggestion, to be honest, is more a "moderate" in this political climate. However, with all that is going on in the Middle East these days, I think that Allison Kaplan Sommer's An Unsealed Room offers some excellent insight into life in Israel. You can't vote for her for a Koufax, but feel free to read her anyway.

I would like to retract my vote and change it to this. I made a mistake.
Hard call but I have to go for the coalition.

If not, I'll go for Norwegianity.

Another self-vote alert: Phronesisaical.
But so many good ones... Norwegianity, 3 Quarks Daily, By Neddie Jingo!, Neil Shakespeare, Whirled View. I'd encourage any of you not as shameless as I to vote for these folks.

Hey,
I'm gonna give a shout out for Living The Scientific Life (Scientist, Interrupted). There are many different publications and places to gain scientific knowledge, and has compiled an impressive number of them here, interspersed by her own insightful writings. Definitely one of the best blogs around.

This one could give me headaches into next year. It comes down to three for me: Street Prophets, Bark Bark Woof Woof, and Dohiyi Mir. Given that Bobby just hit 100K hits at BBWW, I think I'm going to pass him over this year (sorry, Bobby!). And of the two, Street Prophets is probably far less well-known than NTodd at DM is.
So I guess that's where my vote's going to go: Street Prophets. (Now I'll probably get banned from BBWW and DM!)

For some reason I've been left off of the list even though most of my nominations came in this category, but I'll vote for myself anyway. I appreciate the nod for Best Writing and Best New Blog, but I was nominated in this category as well and I think it's overall the best fit. I don't want to be too ambitious after all, and I have another choice for best new blog and it ain't me (which left this as my only chance to vote for myself).

I hereby (hurriedly, ineloquently, but nonetheless) vote Echidne of the Snakes for best writing, best blog, and most deserving of wider recognition (though she may already getting more of that). In the event that I can't do that--if I have to pick one category only per blog, say, and haven't read the rules properly (where would I find them?)--then I'll go with the latter category.

I can't remember if I voted on this or not, so perhaps this won't count if I already did. I am too busy making sure the Maine Guard does its duty.
Progressive Blog Digest, in its Blogger form on Bloglines, and in my email box each morning as Today's News, gives me much to think about, though I admit sometimes I don't read it if I want to have a calmer day not thinking about where the USA is headed! But it is indispensable. When does Nick Burbules sleep? Quite a remarkable service.

The Kentucky Democrat describes the blogger, not the contents. The contents are far-reaching from sports to politics to Hollywood to religion. The politics are national, local, and otherwise. Since I am not into TV and movies and the like, I can read a few items in The Kentucky Democrat and act like I know what I am talking about with regard to the latest stars and gossip. I've learned more about the Jewish faith since reading this blog than I ever knew. It certainly deserves wider recognition.

I vote for the Progressive Blog Digest, an incredibly useful daily compendium of news and commentary, extracted from 40-50 reality-based blogs, put together as a labor of love by Nick Burbules. The daily PBD is not just a list of links, but rather consists of streamlined narratives supported by judiciously selected excerpts, that unfold with pithy headers and Nick's occasional snarky and insightful commentary. Plus, there's usually a hilarious or jaw-dropping "bonus item" at the end.
It's essential reading, and the first thing I read with my coffee every morning.

As a conservative libertarian who thinks Ayn Rand makes sense, I rarely agree with the views expressed at TPRS, but I do find them entertaining and sometimes enlightening. I hope you will count my vote anyway... (If it's any help, I am left handed!)

Pastpeak.com expands my world - daily, dependably - and always with a bit of humor [Today's Bush Joke] and beauty [often luminous photographs (Gumpagraphs) taken by a friend.] Jonathan's style and point of view both provoke and soothe: a pretty addictive blend. Just the right balance of new information, insight, and shared outrage. (I notice he was also nominated for Best Writing.) I feel like I've nearly become an expert on the [now post] peak oil situtation and related global warming issues, thanks to his posts and essays, and I've been inspired enough by them that I've read several of the books he's referred to. His ongoing coverage of the Bush Administration's meltdown is not just astute; it's often zinger-filled if not outright and deliciously euphoric. His ability to select, edit, and highlight passages in the excerpts he brings us (so you can easily choose how much you want to read) is fundamental to the site's success and a real gift to his readers. Frankly, it's darn hard to imagine a day without his insight, humor, and fellowship.
