New (2nd) Koufax Nominations post.
I'm closing the comment section for the previous one, as it's becoming cumbersome. Read the original post for categories, then post nominations here.
Note: Some people are concerned that their comments are not showing up. That's just a new feature of the upgraded MT - in order to prevent comment spam, it holds for moderation which contain more than three URLs. Don't worry, we approve them within a few hours.
Update: This thread is now closed. Please use the one at the top of the page.

I'm nominating my About.com bog....US Liberals at About.com (http://usliberals.about.com)....in the Best Blog-Pro division, even though I'm not sure anyone can hold a candle to Josh Marshall at TalkingPoints Memo. (About.com is owned by the New York Times.)
I work my heart out to ignore and flout New York Times guidelines and protocol, am fully and proudly partisan at all times, and bring naked honesty to the table every day. (And I've still been nominated as a top-five About.com blog for 2005.)
Would far prefer to be nominated in the "Most Deserving of Wider Recognition" category. (I am an independent contractor to the Times, not an employee.)

I nominate Rubber Hose in the category of "Most deserving of wider recognition."
Might it not be a good idea to have "weight classes" a la the Weblog Awards? You know, like best blog of blogs 500-1000, best of 1500-2000, etc. I was just thinking, it's tough for the little blogs to compete with most of the top blogs out there. A blog like Eschaton is sort of like Shaq and the NBA MVP award; Atrios could conceivably win it every year. Which wouldn't be a problem at all. But if the idea is to promote lefty blogs in general, then really the only category to try to squeeze the lesser known blogs into are the "Best New" and "Most deserving of wider recognition" categories. In any case, the Koufaxes are fine the way they are, but I just thought this might be a way to make them even better. If by chance your having to read this comment made the Koufaxes less fun for anyone, I am truly sorry.

Blog Deserving of Wider Recognition
we move to canada
wemovetocanada.blogspot.com
for americans considering a move to canada, there is very little current information out there.
this blog chronicles a new york city couple who applied and moved to the toronto area.
while the blog also highlights various political and personal issues, it has quickly become the best place for getting information (what you need to know, what to avoid, etc.) about moving to canada.

As a firm proponent of real democracy (where votes are accurately counted)...
I'd like to Nominate the Brad Blog (bradblog.com) for ALL relevant categories.
Posted by: m3 | December 19, 2005 07:28 AM
I have to do this: Much as I adore Jeralyn and think TalkLeft is wonderful, there are lots of good legal blogs and it's an area no one hesitates to cover.
But The Brad Blog is covering the most vital issue in a democracy, and one that the other leading blogs will not touch. It's the issue everyone seems to be too hinky about, they've all let the right-wing make them afraid to examine it. Our democracy is being ripped out from under us but Brad is making a few people aware of what's going on.
(Also, I love The General and The Poorman, but Fafnir is god!)

QUESTION FOR ALL:
While there are hundreds of nominations in the three threads, how many of you are actually going to visit all of them?
I ask because, it seems to me that many won't even bother. They'll vote for the ones they've heard of, or the their own. In the meantime they'll ignore ones worthy of a few votes.
Sites like:
Norwegianity (http://www.norwegianity.com/)
Making Conservatives Cringe (http://fredbieling.blogspot.com/)
It's Morning Somewhere (http://morningsomwhere.blogspot.com/)
The Defeatists (http://thedefeatists.typepad.com/)
The Disgruntled Chemist (http://thedisgruntled.blogspot.com/)
Thou Shall Not Suck (http://www.thoushallnotsuck.com)
all deserve more recognition (which is why I'm nominating them for that category).
Yet few people will actually go see what they are all about, or visit the others people have nominated (which is what I'm doing the next few weeks).
All I ask is that everyone visits as many of the nominated sites as possible before placing a vote. It should only take 5 - 10 minutes to read a few entries.
Truth is, that is the only way to make an informed decision.
Sorry for the chastizing, but it just seems like there are many good sites who will get the shaft simply because no one will bother to check them out. Instead, the big names will get the votes.

Mitchell...
Not only do I visit dozens of links recommended in these threads, I can attest to the fact that hundreds of people do the same -- at least, they have visited MLW through these threads. I can only imagine they had not done so before and are now doing so precisely because of curiousity engendered by the Koufax noms.
Frankly, I find the nomination threads extremely helpful -- not to mention awe-inspiring, given the overwhelming number of great commenters, diarists, humourists, essayists and analysts whose work I am pleased to say has robbed me of sleep.
My blogroll runneth over...

Most Humorous Blog- Fafblog. Pies and Giblets, can it get any better? No, I didn't think so.
Most Humorous Post: Giblets war on the Fat Old Sun. Captures the essense of the stupidity of bushco "thinking" as brightly as anything.
Best Group Blog- The Left Coaster Soto, Mary, eRiposte, even that Duckman feller, they got ideas and attitude. And they're almost always right.
Best New Blog- Firedoglake, even though they started in December, being a lefty ya gotta be a bit rebellious, right?
Best Series- eRiposte on Yellow Cake et al, and there's a lot, but it's pretty damn near complete. Kudos to eRiposte, and damnation to bushco.

I've already left some nominations, but without the URLs. Here again, with some additions:
Most Deserving of Wider Recognition:
By Neddie Jingo!
http://byneddiejingo.blogspot.com/
Norwegianity
http://www.norwegianity.com
It's pretty clear with these two. Neddie has great writing, no filler, good commenters. Norwegianity is simply on top of everything.
It has to be said, though, that there's a lot of good stuff out there, but the blogosphere seems often to rally around the best self-marketers.
Best New Blog:
Phronesisaical: Politics, Philosophy, International Affairs, and Fruit http://phronesisaical.blogspot.com/
This is my own (apologies), including the contributions of three other top-notch members. We're a gang of of profs and researchers who link, write, try to avoid truisms, cliches, and blogosphere bandwagoning, and try to be on top of stories before many others in blogland. Plus, nice photos courtesy of four great photographers.
Best Expert Blog:
Pharyngula
http://pharyngula.org/
Arms Control Wonk
http://www.armscontrolwonk.com/
Sic Semper Tyrannis
http://turcopolier.typepad.com/sic_semper_tyrannis/
Peter Levine
http://www.peterlevine.ws/mt/
Four obvious choices. Pharyngula for science and squid. ACW for the best reporting on arms issues. SST for some of the very best insider information on war and peace. PL for modest, thoughtful comments on policy issues. These guys aren't guessing based on the daily papers -- they know their work.
Best group blog:
Whirled View
http://www.whirledview.typepad.com/
A nice, simple, well-written blog by people with big hearts and minds. Kos and TPMCafe are the choices of most and Kos will probably win. But take a look at this one. A nice contribution to the internets.
Best Writing:
By Neddie Jingo!
http://byneddiejingo.blogspot.com/
I don't know of a better writer in blogdom. This isn't the everyday whipped-out piece that does the alternative take on the talking points of the day, which just occasionally hits upon a nice piece of writing. It's also not trendy urban pomo cynicism. This is lovely and funny well-crafted writing all the time.
Most humorous:
James Wolcott
http://jameswolcott.com/
He's a pro and it shows. Fafblog and The Poorman both do some nice stuff, but Wolcott's got my nomination.
For further giggles, Dear Leader's Daily Thought http://dearleadersdailythought.blogspot.com/
Best Blog Overall:
I have no idea -- there are too many good ones and too much diversity for one sole godblog. But I'd ask you to consider voting for those who do daily hard work, avoid facile comments, and put in real time writing solid pieces while staying on top of current events.

Best Blog: Bradblog
Blog deserving of more recognition: Bradblog. Nobody has come close to his coverage of the voting issues/problems/corruption facing this country. He is running around the country getting news first hand. He's also trying to get the news out to people via radio shows, because there are still so many people in our country who do not have access to the internet like we do. So he's going way above and beyond. Handles himself great and discusses things so calmly and knows the facts. Has a few great guest bloggers too that do a wonderful job.
Best Group Blog: The Huffington Post. Love the diverse and honest guest writers blogging their viewpoints about current issues.
Best blog, Pro Division: John Conyers gives excellent first hand reports imho of news from within the Congressional community in ConyersBlog. He was among the very first in Washington to stand up to the corruption and deserves recognition for doing so. I was one of the half million people who signed a petition requesting an answer from Bush about the Downing Street Memos that Mr. Conyers initiated. Didn't get to see it on MSN, of course, but I did get to see him deliver them all to the Whitehouse gate online, it was great. Actually, he's still standing pretty much alone. With few exceptions, the rest of the spineless bought-and-paid-for corrupt group are still playing "the games" with their earplugs and blinders on, laughing all the way to the bank.
Sorry so long, I just appreciate them all so much for trying to help and I got carried away....I also have a son who spent a year in Ramadi, Iraq, so it's way personal. God Bless our Troops. God Bless the internet and our freedom of speech via the blogs.

He keeps us well informed with the news on Diebold and various other important issues for our country.
I'd like to nominate him for one of the best blogs for 2005. He deserves it. Plus he could use the money probably. BTW is there prize money?
Thank you!

I would like to nominate the blog "liberalgirlnextdoor" in the catagory "most deserving of wider recognition". Her blog entries are crisp, timely, sometimes satirical, always thoughtful and engaging, and tend to evoke an interest in further researching the issues (for which purpose she thoughtfully supplies the relevent links!) As a writer who has had pieces published on buzzflash, democratic underground, online journal, smirking chimp, dissident voice and others, I appreciate the careful crafting that goes into these entries...

okay, i have to nominate an essay of mine for best individual post
Tsunamis and Mangroves: The Shrimp Connection
this story is timely (the one year anniversary of the indonesian tsunami approaches, and on that day, indonesia will release the final numbers of those who died in that disaster). i also think it is a really fine piece, especially since it has been republished several times in the print media.
okay, so someone out there please read it and second my nomination. i'd appreciate it.
Posted by: GrrlScientist | December 20, 2005 06:14 PM
yep, i'll second that nomination for Tsunamis and Mangroves, and i was actually on my way here/there anyway to second/third all the nominations for Birds in the News at Living the Scientific Life for best series anyway, so this is all a bit serendipitous.

I have to recommend for pro blog
Steve Clemons' The Washington Note He does do professional journalism.
If he didn't he'd be great for "expert" or "underrecognized" as he's is quite an expert on inside Washington.
It was his meeting in which Lawrence Wilkerson came out of the anti-Bush closet (as it might be described).
This guy kept a lot of us sane and gave us a lot of info during the Bush administration's attempt to get John Bolton voted into the UN ambassadorship. In fact, he might be the one who provided enough info, to get that vote stopped.
He is breaking all sorts of news and writing some great analysis. Not more liberal that thou, but he's been a great help and deserves more recognition.
I can't think of any other categories right now. I just thought that needed to be said.

Humbling as it is, I guess I'll have to nominate Needlenose myself as the blog Most Deserving of Wider Recognition. But at least I can borrow testimonials from supposedly respectable bloggers such as Praktike today, discussing the Iraqi election:
Swopa, who has been predicting this result for weeks now, has been as right as anybody over the past two-plus years of Iraqi turmoil.
I'll shamelessly admit that he's correct. This year, I was the first blogger to point out (back in August) that the much-hyped Sunni involvement in the recent elections/constitutional referendum "... will tell Sunnis what their clear role is in the new Iraq: Losers.
And there's no reason to think they'll accept that fate peacefully. Instead, the emotional energy they've invested in the campaign to defeat the constitution will be happily reaped by the insurgents, who will claim to be the only legitimate representation the Sunnis have left."
This view is now on its way to becoming conventional (if tragic) wisdom. I've also done excellent work, IMO, on the Plame investigation, being the first blogger to suggest Judith Miller's role in spreading the leak -- three weeks before Arianna Huffington -- in addition to groundbreaking posts (for example, about how Miller was used by Lewis Libby and how Colin Powell helped blow the whistle on the leakers) that the rest of the blogiverse has cruelly ignor -- umm, I mean, has yet to catch up with.

I'll have more for this and other categories, but before I forget, I want to nominate Camp Butch as Best New Blog (http://mysite.verizon.net/eieio/campbutch/index.html). Unlike any other blog out there, it's a near-obsessive tribute to the late and great Morning Sedition radio show. Clarke is a brilliant, if strange, writer, and without this blog many of us would be going cold turkey.

Given her tireless and successful reporting on a recent example of good journalism that itself was attacked voraciously by political groups -- PBS's Breaking the Silence, I think Trish Wilson (The Countess) deserves the win for "Best Single Issue Blog."
There are many excellent bloggers who deserve recognition in many of the other categories, but as blogs gain in popularity, some of them are starting to fall prey to the same kind of false balance and superficial coverage of the "issue of the day" for which the major media too often can be faulted in the attempt to "please everyone all the time."
It's commendable when a reporter not only sticks with a subject to provide ongoing and followup coverage, but also keeps investigating the primary source material. In this case, Trish's reporting is doubly commendable because she supported other journalists who now have been vindicated notwithstanding the fathers' rights disinformation campaign against them.
