What...is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

ppne_forest_ave_portland.jpgThis Wednesday Ayotte wends its way to oral argument before the Rehnquist er Roberts Court. This will be the first reproductive rights case the Court has heard in five years. Following the general nuttery of Central American Values ... er ... Heartland Values, the State of New Hampshire (through which every Mainiac must pass to get to the United States) has targeted adolesent girls, passing an act to make access to medical procedures conditional upon the affirmative consent of persons who ... don't need the medical procedures.

Parental notification. Can a girl who attends Catherine Mcauley or Waynflete or Chevrus (now co-ed) or Deering or Portland High School or PATHS, or King, Lincoln, Moore or West Middle Schools, or any of the parochial schools, can they take the #2 bus to 730 Forest Ave. and enter this building, without telling her father or step-father or ... Fortunately, Maine is in a different, a more Canadian North America, than New Hampshire. We also have an approximation to Single Payer, which incidently covers reproductive health.

Bridgekeeper:
STOP!
He who would cross the Bridge of Death
Must answer me
These questions three
Ere the other side he see.
  1. does New Hampshire's Act contain an adequate health exception?
  2. does the Act contain an adequate death exception?
  3. does the Act place an undue burden on unemancipated minors who wish to obtain an abortion?

Look forward to revising the ground muddied in Casey. Pennsylvania Dems and Fems take notice. This is your primary too.

Nancy Northup, President, Center for Reproductive Rights and Bill Saunders, Senior Fellow, Family Research Council will be debating the issue at the Pew Research Center for 90 minutes in the morning, before the oral arguments in the afternoon. Bloggers who want to cover the debate should contact Shahid Buttar at SButtar {at} ACSlaw DOT org.

What other major operation can a minor have without her parents even knowing about it? What if a 14-year-old shows up at a hospital and announces that she wants her appendix removed? Will they do it?

Is a D&C a "major operation"? Ironically, if a teenager chooses not to terminate a pregnancy, they have 15% chance of having a "major operation" (c-section).

Do we also then require that pregnant teenagers obtain parental notification prior to all pre-natal treatments. What about childbirth? An epidural? Do parents have to be present when their 17 yr. old children give birth?

What about obtaining birth control? Since contraceptives themselves have some associated risks, should clinics and pharmacies not notify parents when their children take oral or patch contraceptives or have an IUD placed?
