2004 Koufax Award Finalists For Best Single Issue Blog
We have narrowed a very competitive field to eleven finalists in the category of Best Single Issue Blog. Those eleven each have a reasonably narrow focus but, taken together, encompass a broad range of issues. The single issues of the finalists can be as broad as economics, the media, or the Middle East. It can also be as narrow as the criminal justice system of a single state or, indeed, the machinations of a single politician.
Each is deserving of being a finalist. Congratulations to all eleven. Please vote once for one of the following:
Confined Space (Workplace Health & Safety)
The Daily DeLay (Tom DeLay)
The Daily Howler (The Media)
Brad DeLong (Economics)
Grits for Breakfast (Texas Justice System)
Informed Comment (Middle East)
Media Matters (Media)
Orcinus (Domestic Terrorism)
W. David Stephenson (Homeland Security)
Talk Left (Criminal Law)
Trish Wilson (Family Law)

I'm not sure Somerby would care if he wins or not. But he's been carefully, thoughtfully, and yes, incomparably documenting the foibles of the media for seven long years. He deserves the recognition.
Tally one for

INFORMED COMMENT - Mr Cole has given me a remarkable insight into Iraq, the politics and how it affects the lives of the Iraqi people. He has always written back to me when emailed. A true gentleman, who truly cares about justice. If I lived in Ann Arbor, I would attend his classes, just to learn. Mr. Cole, at times, has said things in favor of U.S. policy. While I disagreed with him, he again wrote back and thanked me for my comments, but not in a patronizing way. He should have a column in every major, and minor, newspaper across this country. Talk Left is also very good.

I have a great respect, for the excellent writing and research ,of Trish Wilson. Especially her work on the Family Law Issue.
The Family Law Issue is the MOST improtant "ignored" issue in this country.
Women are often prevented from protecting their children in Family Courts across America.
When women are denied their civil and human rights, their children are left without a voice.

I can't decide who's more important - Juan Cole, who cuts through the administration BS in Iraq and the Middle East generally; Bob Somerby, who cuts through the media BS that's deforming the country to the point where democracy itself is endangered; or Brad DeLong, who cuts through the BS that's working to drive 90% of us into the poor house.
Huh, I just surprised myself. The most important of these is Somerby. If he's successful, the DeLongs and Coles and Merritts and Neiwerts and all the rest will take up their rightful places and have the influence they deserve.
One vote for The Daily Howler.

I want to vote for Grits for Breakfast for the quality of its reporting. Scott is doing some serious quality investigative journalism, which, in a better world, would receive a lot of exposure in print. It doesn't, of course, so, instead, he's using the weblog medium to make sure the message gets out.
There is a lot of talk in the news these days about witchhunt mentality in political blogs. It doesn't have to be that way. Grits may not be the loudest political blog around, but it's important work—an example of weblog journalism at its best.
Posted by: Chip | February 14, 2005 10:59 AM
I vote for W David Stephenson in support of Homeland Security issues. We have seen the well intentioned government agencies have their internal problems and it behooves all of us to be aware of the threats to US lifestyle.
The Dept. of HS has said business have to prepare their own unique plan to survive terrorism. HS is tasked with protecting our borders, transportation and infrastructure, not with protecting individual businesses, which are our way of live (livelyhood). I vote for David Stephenson's blog because I support increased awareness of our acknowledged enemy's before they strike next. They will you know!

Ultimately, I hope the Daily DeLay is successful in its mission, but I'm voting for myself, because homeland security is too important to everyone (and to prone to being used as an excuse for infringement on our rights) to be left to those inside the Beltway.
Plus, I agree with Blogging the President 2004 that my "smart mobs for homeland security" concept is "closer to a 'new politics' way of organizing a government service than anything I've seen" -- it's time that we realize that a combination of new technologies and understanding of the science of social networks have effectively put control of the flow of information back into the hands of the people -- whether or not government realizes that -- and start acting accordingly.
It's a great honor for me, with just 8 months of blogging, to even be in this league, and I just hope people will take the time to check out what I'm doing -- and to send me tips and ideas.
Thanks.

W. David Stephenson's blog on Homeland Security captures the essence of two important issues from our perspective. First, he has presented ideas that have technical merit, and he focuses the reader on the simplicity of the solution. Second, where he talks about wireless solutions in particular, wireless solutions were the ones that worked in the days after 9/11. If anything, it has stimulated solutions known as "wireless fiber" that present more portable and bandwidth intensive results. The number of manufacturers stepping up to build such products has been dramatic. There is nothing like stimulating a market! That is what David does well.

The Daily DeLay is doing an important job, but how can one vote for the best without an equally detailed knowledge of what and how well the others are doing? I suspect that few voters have that knowledge and so are voting not for 'the best' but for what they know best. The prize is for that reason misplaced.
