Selfish women

On some days, I find some of the absolute best political writing outside the traditional boundaries of the Lefty political blogosphere. Today was one of those days. From Getupgrrl at Chez Miscarriage:

Selfishness: A Brief Analysis Of A Puzzling Pattern

Women who choose to live childfree are selfish. After all, children are the future! How dare women prioritize their own desires over the needs of society? And by "society," I of course mean me. After all, who will pay for future public road repairs if women aren't coerced into raising children they don't want? Should I be forced to drive over potholes simply because some hyper-actualized tart wants to spend her weekends reading and relaxing and fornicating? I don't think so - and neither will you, if you know what's good for you.

On the other hand, women who choose to have children are selfish. They just sit around the house all day, drinking Shiraz and masturbating to "Dr. Phil." These women are so sociopathologically self-obsessed that everything revolves around them - feeding the baby, changing the baby, dressing the baby, rocking the baby, it's all about them, them, them, them. Do they think we're stupid? Do they think we don't know full well that the term "Mommy and Me" actually refers to the same person?

Turns out Getupgrrl has as many hands as Hindu Kali, so be sure to read them all. It's a wonderful portrait of the state of feminism today.

On previous days, I found Ayelet Waldman's discourse on children and drug-use at Bad Mother, Cecily's very personal thoughts on late-term abortion at And I Wasted All That Birth Control, and Julie's justifiable diatribe on the state of healthcare in America on A Little Pregnant

Every once in a while there is a great uproar and gnashing of teeth over the dearth of popular women bloggers in the political blogosphere. I used to participate quite actively myself. Perhaps, however, we need to widen our lens to catch the full scope of feminist activity, venturing in places we'd never thought to look. Many of the blogs mentioned above reside in the self-described infertility sphere; others are, as last Sunday's article in New York Times Fashion and Style section coined, "Mommy Blogs". Feminism, it seems, is alive and well. If you know where to look.
