If a tree falls in the forest... by Eli at Left I on the News

...gets my vote, though i had some difficulty picking that one over 'killing at a distance' and 'the disappeared'...

I'm voting for my post "Killing at a Distance"

Posted by: Eli Stephens at January 29, 2005 06:28 PM

I'll vote for mine at Europhobia explaining the differing responses of Americans and Europeans to terrorism. It's halfway decent stuff, if I say so myself...

Posted by: Nosemonkey at January 29, 2005 07:59 PM

I have to go with "Pecksniffery" by Lance Mannion. He's a relative newcomer, but definitely worth checking out.

The Political and the Personal by David Neiwert at Orcinus

Posted by: Mark Gisleson at January 30, 2005 12:06 PM

The Political and the Personal.

Although, it should be correctly pointed out that this was a 2003 post, not 2004. I was frankly dissappointed it didn't win last year ... the winning Billmon post was nice, but had nowhere near the reasonnance of Neiwert's post.

Speaking of Billmon, the best post of 2004 was probably one of his, but not either of those nominated here.

Posted by: Observer at January 30, 2005 06:13 PM

I'm definitely going with Professor Cole's post, "If America were Iraq, What would it be Like?"

I'll go with the two posts from JuliusBlog:

Timeline of Terror Alerts

Chart: Bush Ratings vs. Terror Alerts

These two posts spread like wildfire last summer, and made many people aware of the kind of games Ashcroft was playing with our minds.

Noticed that after these posts the Bush people stopped advertising their bogus terror alerts. I think this may have been the case of a blog changing the course of a policy.

Tough choice, not that I've read all of them, but I tried and read a bunch for the first time tonight.

I'll vote for William Polk's "Thoughts on Torture" guestblogged on Juan Cole's site.

It has to be DIGBY, and of the four you list, A VERY OLD STORY captures what i like best - history, analysis, and an explanation for what is going on in our world.

But, i would have liked to see his take on abu gharib. Of his routine, out of the park, posts, that one is the Ruthian blast of all.

- Chart: Bush Ratings vs. Terror Alerts by Julius Civiatus at JuliusBlog

Those were some courageous posts, and I remember they had a huge influence on public opinion. Everyone I know saw that chart. Everyone was talking about that chart. It was the equivalent of Toto removing the courtain to reveal the real Wizard of Oz, only scarier.

I would also like to mention "The Political and the Personal" by Orcinus.

Lots of excellent posts nominated this year, but I will go with these two because of their significance:

Timeline of Terror Alerts by Julius Civitatus (with help from Biltud) at JuliusBlog

Chart: Bush Ratings vs. Terror Alerts by Julius Civiatus at JuliusBlog

Note to Wampum: the link you posted for the Chart is broken; this is the right link as posted in JuliusBlog:

http://img70.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img70&image=aproval_vs_alert_chart_NEW.gif

Julius (with the help from Biltud) did what the mainstream media should have done: research and track those bogus terror alerts. They bypassed the media filter and revealed the fear tactics of Ridge and Ashcroft.

Unfortunately they got lots of crap because of these posts (Julius mentioned in his blog that he got a lot of abuse from freeper types). If only they had been some wingnuts debating font types to debunk Dan Rather, Julius and Biltud would have been treated by the mainstream media like stars.

I would also like to mention Orcinus and Juan Cole for tie-breakers.
