January 12, 2005 October is Koufax Pledge Drive month

The Koufax Awards: Most Deserving of Wider Recognition

This seeks to honor those bloggers who are consistently good but for whatever reason do not receive the recognition they deserve. I was a bit subjective in putting together this list - I figured if a blog was in the top 200 or so in the TLB's Ecosystem (top 50 Lefties), it was pretty well recognized. Let's face it, in the real world, none of us, even Atrios, is recognized enough.

(I also lost this list due to computer failure a couple of times, so if you nominated someone and I left them out, please email me ASAP.x)

You might want to re-think leaving people out based on the TLB ranking system. That thing's been haywire for the last several months.

Posted by: Roxanne at January 12, 2005 02:33 PM

I like Busy, Busy, Busy from this list.

You may want to re-think a couple of these. Daily Howler is amazing, but he's been quoted in the New York Times and on Meet the Press. How much "wider recognition" can you get than that?

Posted by: Rob Salkowitz at January 12, 2005 02:48 PM

I think TLB put in a massive overhaul just a week ago, so I feel a bit more confident about it.

I did waffle over the Howler, but like some earlier categories, erred on the side of caution. If our readers believe it has enough recognition, I imagine they'll vote for someone else, neh?

Dohiyi Mir, where nTodd has been shameless in his attempt to win a Koufax. Catblogging, dogblogging, and heartbreakingly beautiful pictures of New England in winter punctuate incisive political commentary. Plus trying to raise wampum for MB and the crew.

A lot of great choices on the list...the pragmatist in me knows this won't be counted, but the diplomat in me wouldn't have it any other way:

1/2 vote for Spontaneous Arising

Both are well done, well written, thought provoking and entertaining. I'd say that's the trifecta, but that's four attributes rather than three.

I will go with FUGOP as my first choice, just because David breaks new news a bit more than the others do. My favorite blog on the web is Spontaneous Arising. Mike Hawkins consistently blogs a wide array of intelligent, timely and pertinent news items. The photos and graphics are always top-shelf, impeccible and artfully presented. Mike is a *great* writer and an excellent reporter, a person with an authentic American "voice." He has the intuitive senses of a veteran news hound and the sensibilities of a yogic master. Coming from Boulder, Spontaneous Arising is well positioned to preview the rising tide of spontaneous revolution in America. There is no finer blog that's clickable for those with a rounded variety of interests and concerns.

I have a horse in this race, so will not vote yet... But how many people are sampling what they're unfamiliar with before they vote? Otherwise, the votes will fall in line with the recognition they already get, defeating the purpose doncha think?

Modesty (as if I had any) demands I not vote for myself. So I will vote for PAM'S HOUSE BLEND instead.

But I had to reply to JS's comment because it would seem to give the wrong (completely) impression.

Though he/she voted for The BRAD BLOG (thanks!), he/she also said:

"I vote for BradBlog, despite the owner's unfortunate overuse of blocking to prevent comments.
Hint, Brad: when you block a troll from an ISP that uses dynamic addressing, you end up blocking everyone from the same ISP."

I block almost nobody. Have less than 4 addresses on my blocked list after a year, and none of those addresses should block an entire ISP! So please email me, and let me know what's up, and we'll fix whatever is keeping you inappropriately from getting in!

Thanks! (And thanks Wampum for the Sandies! Much fun! And I could use some these days! :-)

Majikthise poses important questions in a unique way. As we see the ruling paradigm of the media and the web slowly dumbing people down (overall), this blog constantly, CONSTANTLY, strives to try to make my brain cells come alive. I hope others feel the same way.

Others sort of do this same thing, but there is far more clutter. Plus, this blogger is getting better at focusing on important philosophical issues and how they relate to the overall decline in the USA of an appreciation of functional intelligence, and the diminution of appreciation that human intelligence is evolutionary and is actually advancing, despite the anecdotal information presented by some of the blogs entered in this very category (!).

I'd like to see more direct coverage of the history of anti-intellectualism in the USA in the blogger's direct information, but some of the links to philosophy web sites get around to that fairly quickly.

I just wish the blogger had better taste in music, though I do love Johnny Cash.

The Bonassus is consistent, in that the author writes about topics that interest him, rather than something that might attract some target demographic group. Although other nominess also meet this criterion, that's reason #1 to select this Blog. Since both his own Jewishness and his passion for baseball are subjects visited with some frequency, any award named for Koufax and yet attached to political commentary of any sort, should go to The Bonassus.

Posted by: Honky at January 16, 2005 09:58 AM

Absolutely. Flogging the Simian is just about the only blog I visit regularly. It provides views and analysis that go deeper than what is offered by a million other blogs.

Soj seems intent not merely to be a blogger, but an honest to god journalist (I'm refering specifically to the Jack Idema series and the Uklrainian Election), which is more than can be said for most.

I also appreciate news from far away countries with funny names and unrecognizable flags, which reminds me that, yes, there is in fact a world outside of US politics and yes, it is worthy of our full attention. There Interweb seems to be saturated by Americo-centric blogs, and Flogging the Simian breaks the mold in style.

Rock on.

Posted by: Rictor at January 16, 2005 10:01 AM

Flogging The Simian offers one of the most articulate understandings of world events that in the United States seem obscure but that to the rest of the world are more than germane. I visit FTS daily and value highly the writing and analysis.

FLOGGING THE SIMIAN

Soj is on the cutting edge. The information she shares is not available, for free, anywhere else. In addition, most of the information exposes the most egregious actions of the United States. I don’t mean lies about social security, or the erosion of the bill of rights, I mean the thousands that are butchered because of US policy.

For years I have been wishing for a site that summarized international events that go unnoticed by American media, until it is too late.

Soj is going to be famous, and you should be able to say you were there from the beginning.

Posted by: Danny at January 18, 2005 03:19 PM

The Bonehead Compendium is a weekly must-read. Cataloguing the glaring deficiencies, jaw-dropping quotes, implausible deniabilities and other calamatous situations in the age of DeEnlightenment. Complete with an unrepentantly biased perspective, just like all the other ones up for Koufax awards.

A stellar blog worth considering is the Bonehead Compendium -- an excellent read with posts on a variety of topics dear to the hearts of those of us concerned with the sad spectacle of what our country is becoming under the regime of George Bush and his fundamentalist fuckwads. If you want to know how bad it is, and how bad it's gonna get, Bonehead is the place to be: www.boneheadcompendium.com.

Steve is combative but no lazy name-caller, a first rate writer and thinker, often funny and self-effacing. There is a nice wide range in this blog, from which I move to more focused sites like ORCINUS and MAXSPEAK and THE DAILY HOWLER.

Rising like a towering lighthouse above the wretched fog of the internet blogsphere, The Bonehead Compendium (www.boneheadcompendium.com) cuts through the murky, the the unconsidered, the unresearched, the banal, and the hackneyed ramblings of most political blogs and shines a brilliant beacon of thoughtful, provactive, witty, well-considered prose across our fledgling virtual landscape.

Political Strategy

Posted by: Jamal at January 25, 2005 09:19 PM

Bob Harris. For two reasons:

1) I came across this quote in the bible: And the Disciples bid Jesus stop and do Converse; and when He had finished tightening the laces of those shoes, they asked of Him, "Lord, we have followed you and ministered with you and dodged bricks with you and many of us have scabies and poison ivy from making in the bushes, which is why some of us join in with those in the towns who laugh at you. Forgive us, as it was cruel, but we could not help ourselves. We itch in your service, Lord. We are sure a Healing from You might not be out of order." And Jesus spoke, saying, And thy point is? Didst thou think this was to be a fun road trip? Didst thou believe it would be like unto the travels of Bob Harris, full of wonder and reflection and small cute animals? Be not like the fig tree, or the red state voter who thinks only on pancakes at iHop and bouncy-bouncy, or the LORD shall make of you a debris cloud. I'm just sayin'.
And the Disciples asked, "Lord, who is this Bob Harris that we might partake of the wonder and reflection?" And Jesus answered, saying, Hoo Boy, do I hafta talk to you people...
(Animal Acts Against The State, 593:2)

2) U.S.C., Title IX, Sec. 319, para. 2(a) states: "Under control of the Federal Small Administration (established by the Coal Tar and Hyrax Act of 1952, and the Pudu Cost-Benefit Realignment of 1964), small cute animals, humorous politically-motivated social commentary, and the experiental benefits of foreign travel shall be made available to the People through thus and various avenues of commerce and communicative arts as become manifest within the United States from time to time."

You gotta vote for this site. Really. No, really.

It's close between two blogs for me and I know there are many I haven't read that also deserve wider recognition... but there is one I've been metaphorically glued to...

From educating people about the Blackwell fiasco in Ohio to exposing Feeney with the vote-rigging whistleblower articles and a load more besides..
