January 24, 2005 October is Koufax Pledge Drive month

The Koufax Awards: Best Series

This category includes both regular features as well as the best coverage of a single issue. It's also one of the toughest to parse together, as some of the nominating comments were pretty obscure (Can we include a "Nomination with as Few Clues as Possible" category?) This was one reason this post took so long to construct - certainly took most of my skills as an archaeologist to dig some of these up. A few emails to nominees are still pending, and if answered, the post will be updated with that new information.

Once again, one person, one vote, yadda, yadda.

Update: We've now identified a number of cases of people voting more than once (on other threads as well.) Look people, we have an internet guru on staff here at Wampum, if you cheat, we'll find out about it, so just don't bother. This is supposed to be fun, let's keep it that way.

Posted by: Scrum at January 24, 2005 08:09 PM

I wish I wasn't so intent on self-promotion as there is so much good stuff here. However, in hope of making it to the next round, I'll vote for myself, the long series Building on Lakoff (and there were a few more entries since the #40 was posted) by Science and Politics. Perhaps in the finals I'll have the opportunity to vote for something that is actually really good for a change.

Second place: exegesis of the 'Left Behind' book(s) at Slacktivist. As somebody once commented there, it can be a bit like a 1:1 scale map, but still insightful and highly entertaining. May Fred live, thrive, and post long enough to get to the last chapter....

Fred, the Left Behind series.

It's such a relief, especially with the brand of "religion" we're treated to so often these days, to see someone with a religious perspective be incisive and insightful and tolerant and witty and so damn cool.

Jeanne's that way too, but she's not up for this.

At the risk of injury due to excessive self-back-patting, had it been nominated I would have cast a vote for my own DailyKos WA Gov series on the protracted counting processes for governor here in Washington. Links: beginning, initial count wrapup (with series-links), first recount wrapup (more links), most recent report. Deeper analysis will follow at a later date.

I fear I shall incur the Wrath of Norbizness(tm) by not voting for his Ask the President series, but I must go with my gut here. And my gut tells me:

Cheers and Jeers, by my fellow Mainer Bill in Portland, Maine at Daily Kos.

Norbizness is a daily read for me, and I don't want to think about the sheer soul-destroying effort of reading actual transcripts of Presidential town hall hoohahs, but if the Ask the President series went away, I'd be okay. If Cheers and Jeers went away, I'd curl up into a little fetal ball and waste away, all 19th-century tragic-like.

And if that ain't a ringing endorsement for Cheers and Jeers, I don't know what the hell is!

I'm not only going to be shameless enough to vote for myself, I'll give you a sales pitch on why I deserve to be a finalist for my Iraqi election posts (under the category title of "Shiite Showdowns") at Needlenose.

However the results turn out, the major story of the Iraq elections has been Grand Ayatollah Sistani's success in breaking up the coalition of exile-led parties that the U.S. had relied on to appoint its interim quasi-governments, in favor of the Shiite-dominated slate favored to win at least a plurality in this weekend's voting.

As far as I can tell, I've been ahead of all other weblogs in charting this development, from Sistani's unhappiness with the exile-dominated coalition to his support for an independent slate to challenge the interim government, which forced the exile-led Shiite religious parties to switch sides. Being able to spot some of these twists ahead of the justly celebrated Juan Cole has been a pretty heady accomplishment for an amateur like myself, and I'm brazen enough to say I'd appreciate some props for it.

I'm picking Annatopia's "Blogging from the RNC Convention" because she really captured the fun and the energy and the surreality on the streets of New York City, and, most importantly, even when she went back to Texas she kept blogging about it (and investigating). Flogging the Simian's Jack Idema series is a close second (there's a future best-seller or great movie in that story).

If we had more than one vote, I'll send one out to Josh Marshall who deserves a nod for many of his investigative pieces, but most especially for his persistance on the Qaqaa issue in the run-up to the elections.

Also to Marty Lederman on Balkinization for by far the most impressive original analysis in politico-legal blogging in a while. (I'm rather surprised to note it's not up here, presumably because the entries were made only recently). Well, there's always next year.

BTW, Kudos on the absolutely spectacular job of rounding this up. I don't imagine it was a lot of fun linking 40+ individual posts in some series!

Scouts Honor (and I'm an Eagle Scout---one of the gay ones. The National Leadership will have to pry my Ronald Reagan-signed Eagle certificate from my COLD DEAD HANDS)...I did not instigate this tidal wave of votes for Cheers and Jeers. I, and the people in my small Maine village, are humbled and thankful for the spontaneous show of support. Tonight we dance around the Lobster Pole and sing our songs of the sea. Sample lyrics:

"Oh, my toes are so (bleep)ing frozen, woe be to me,
But at least I ain't out bobbin' in the (bleep)ing sea."
(Watch for the CD single coming soon from Bjork. Or is it Bjorn? It's the guy from ABBA.)

That's all. Sorry for the intrusion.

Science and Politics' 'Building on Lakoff' series!

Posted by: jonnybutter at January 28, 2005 07:37 PM

I have to vote for Cheers & Jeers, from Daily Kos. Bill-in-Portland-Maine has created nothing less than a sub-community, who intersperse political digs with personal grief and joy - bringing tears and laughter to me and thousands more monday thru friday - for what now seems like forever (but is really only about a year or so).

For blogging faithfully for so long, and bringing the day's best posts from around the Blogosphere, I say Bill deserves the award.

IsThatLegal, Eric Muller's critique of Malkin's book

Posted by: S Nakamura at January 29, 2005 04:07 PM

Eric Muller's IsThatLegal. They must be getting ready to round up a bunch of Arab-Muslim Americans. Otherwise, what's the point of justifying the JA Internment at this point in time? The sad part is that Muller & Robinson's well researched rebuttals aren't going to be read by the many who will believe that Malkin's book is the definitive word on what we ought to do today.

My vote is for IsThatLegal.

Here's another vote for Muller's IsThatLegal? Malken's flawed research and headline-seeking conclusions make for better copy than the truth.

Cheers and Jeers, because I faithfully remember to read it every day, and Bill (mostly) faithfully posts it every Monday through Friday.

Strong honorable mention to Fred of Slacktivist for suffering through Left Behind and exposing people to the hard-right evangelical mindset in such a powerful way. You're doing the Lord's work, truly.
