This category seeks to recognize the best overall work by a non-professional blogger across the entire year. For my pooling criteria, I chose to use Dwight's definition of "professional" as blogs that are sponsored by a larger organization.
You can vote in comments or via email (one vote per person, please.) The top 8-10 vote recipients will be included in the final round of voting held later this month.
Remember, this is meant to be fun and educational. Think of this as an opportunity to expand your blog horizons and visit new and wonderful places. As I mentioned below, if I missed a nomination, please let me know and I'll rectify the error as soon as possible.
Update:People are beginning to post lists, which makes it rather hard to count. Please try and keep it to one. As it is, I'm only counting the top, unless the favorite is otherwise noted.
In alphabetical order, the first round of nominees for Best Overall Blog by a Non-Professional are:
Under the Same Sun
Whiskey Bar
Feministe
Posted by: Roxanne at January 5, 2005 01:56 PMI accidentally deleted a comment by Susan N. (it truly was unintentional) when I realized that MT had hiccuped and double posted (the missing post was attached to the second post.)
I'm sorry.

(could a posthumous Koufax award bring billmon back to life? we can always hope!)
Posted by: melior at January 5, 2005 02:22 PMWow, thanks for putting me on this list, but I'm not worthy (in this category).
I'd much rather see these folks in the final round:
The American Street
Blogging of the President
Cursor
Daily Kos
Eschaton
Hullaballoo
Maxspeak
Steve Gilliard (he can always turn it down later)
Suburban Guerrilla
Just skipped over all my friends and links, and i still see a lot more than these nine who are more worthy than my dysfunctional blog.
But vote for one? Sticking to the non-pro's I'd have to say Steve Gilliard.
Orcinus
Posted by: randomliberal at January 5, 2005 03:07 PMSteve Gilliard, please.
(Saving the All Spin Zone for Best New Blog, Corrente for Best Group Blog.)
Posted by: Michael Hawkins at January 5, 2005 03:38 PMI guess I'll vote for eight (since Mark did a multiple vote too), in my order of preference.
This Modern World
Eschaton
Hullabaloo
Boing Boing
Echidne of the Snakes
The Sideshow
Mahablog
Body and Soul
How does one vote by email since no email address is given? ;-) And which method of voting do you prefer (i.e., which is easier for you)?
Posted by: Eli Stephens at January 5, 2005 04:03 PMHi, Eli - emails are listed on the right. Since Dwight's is currently compromised, best to send it to me at wampum-at-maine.rr.com.
Posted by: MB at January 5, 2005 04:18 PMI read most of them daily. In order:
Brad Delong

Posted by: Michael at January 5, 2005 05:34 PMIf multiple votes are OK, here are my picks:
1st: Eschaton
tied for 2nd: Making Light; Body and Soul; Crooked Timber; MaxSpeak; Orcinus; Alas, A Blog
If multiple votes are *not* OK, then I'm just voting for Eschaton.
Hullabaloo.
Posted by: oyster at January 5, 2005 05:41 PMWow! I'm so honored to be listed in this company! That's quite sufficient for me.
I vote for Body and Soul.
Jeanne writes so well and thinks so deeply.
I love Feministe also, and the choice was hard.
And Orcinus and Alas, a Blog. Yes, I know that we are not supposed to write lists. Mine would end up having everybody on it.
Making Light
Body and Soul
Slacktivist
Fafblog!
World O' Crap
I too am honored to be listed among these fine folks.
I'm voting for Echidne of the Snakes for being such a snarky goddess, though I'm giving VERY honorable mentions to Alas, A Blog, Body and Soul, Fafblog!, and Pharyngula (even despite his thing for fish - forgivable I suppose).

Posted by: RossK at January 5, 2005 09:29 PM
My vote goes to a real leftie: "Left i on the News."
Intelligent and articulate, "left i" is never strident yet always firm in its convictions.
Posted by: William Kerwin at January 5, 2005 09:30 PMThere's a lot of great blogs on the list but you know I go to Suburban Guerrilla first. There's something about that lady that really speaks to me.
In second place--only because it seems under-appreciated (I think) -- I would say Cursor. It has the most comprehensive coverage in a short space, and often links others don't have.
Body and Soul is eloquent, even soaring sometimes, but she only writes sporadically.
Atrios always wins. Somebody else should have a chance.
I love Orcinis too, but shouldn't that be classified as a one-issue blog?
I've laughed out loud at Hullabaloo. He should be in the comedy category.

Posted by: jeff at January 5, 2005 09:58 PMSuburban Guerrilla: Susan is GREAT. Smart, funny, insightful, irreverent, and always, ALWAYS entertaining.
Posted by: Dave at January 5, 2005 10:10 PMDave Neiwert is a fantastic investigator, but he's not as engaging as Richard, Kate, Spindentist, Forrester, and Sukabi.

Damn, there is a *lot* of great work being done here... I could tick off a dozen sites here that at any one moment I could say is 'best' or 'indispensible' for me. Right at this moment, to name just *one*, I'll have to say Kos -- incredible volume and range and quality of original work, not just cut-n-pasting from someplace else, tacking on only a 'how 'bout that'.
Apologies to Maha, Suburban Guerrilla, MyDD, Atrios, and others... equally valuable; maybe tomorrow morning my blog-o-wheel would come up for one of them instead.

Posted by: Thorlac at January 6, 2005 10:21 AMLeft i on the news. Why? I consistently turn to it for succinct summaries of the outrages of powermongers and the astute analysis that usually accompanies it. Cursor and others for more in-depth and broad perspectives.
I want to mention Left i , Cursor, Common Dreams, Counterpunch are my faves and it has been very difficult to choose "the best" as each has a different way of delivering their messages (I'm sure there are many others, but this is where I get my daily dose of "other than mainstream" news.)
I'd like to thank all alternative news sites. Keep up the good work!

Oh, if he doesn't win, could I please win? I REALLY need the cash. Thanks.

I vote for Brad DeLong because the Social Security "reform" will affect my life profoundly and because of him (and Angry Bear and Krugman) I actually understand the arguments about it and why what the Reds are saying about it is mendacious. He also has the extraordinary virtue of being an economist who talks intelligently about literature, a standard many of my colleagues who specialize in literature have yet to satisfy.

They're denying themselves the pleasure of getting a front row seat to see the progressive realization of the ultimate ideal in World Politics, ideal as the realization of the world of spirit, as G.W.F. Hegel would say.
Or, alternately, they're just missing a good blog which has controversial issues and frequently yells at people on the left in a somewhat illegal way while trying to press for real leftist reform. And the furthering of lefty politics of all kinds.
So, come in on the ground level to the world of excitement and enjoyment which is "The Lost Highway Times". It truly is the pause which refreshes.

There are several on the list that I enthusiastically read, enjoy and/or learn from each day. Sadly, no longer the Whiskey Bar.
But for "Best Blog", my choice is clearly Eschaton.
It's my first read daily, my everyday afternoon check in and the last stop I make on the web nightly.

It's easy to read. Note: that's not the same thing as easy to comprehend. But it's informative and entertaining.
It's easy to comment. That right there ought to knock DailyKos right out of the running. You can register for that site and read for months and still not be allowed to speak.
It's not run by a pro. Eschaton, on the other hand, should be considered a professional blog IMHO not only since Dr. Black has up a "buy me stuff list" (what blogs don't? Corrente and First Draft!) but 'cause in real life Atrios works for Media Matters for America.

Posted by: Patriotically Incorrect at January 11, 2005 10:13 AMThe BRAD BLOG most definitely. User-friendly with good, smart, witty people who know their stuff. Saved MY sorry ass from utter despair...and BROKE THE CURTIS/FEENEY story! I rest my case.

It's nice to see some blogs are meeting higher journalistic standards than the mainstream media and this is one of those blogs.
The exclusive, trustworthy and verifiable reports on the rampant election fraud of 2004 alone.. make it worthwhile reading!

Rude Pundit
Brad Friedman's "The Brad Blog" is THE source for reports on the fraud that occurred in the 2004 general election. It is well researched, well documented and well written with frequent updates, often several times a day. Thanks Brad!

If DailyKos was more Kos and less diaries by the rest of us, I might have gone that way.
Posted by: N in Seattle at January 11, 2005 06:33 PMA solid vote in favor of Total Information Awareness.
Well-written, in-depth and insightful coverage. This writer has a broad-based knowledge that allows him not only to cover a range of issues, but to cover them intelligently.
Posted by: ABS at January 11, 2005 06:35 PMEschaton, definitely! I love Baghdad Burning, too - and of course DailyKos was great in motivating people pre-election - but I find myself turning to Eschaton first thing in the morning, and several more times over the course of the day.
