January 07, 2005 October is Koufax Pledge Drive month

The Koufax Awards: Best Expert

This category seeks to honor those who bring particular expertise, by way of knowledge, experience, or academic achievement, to a particular topic. "Expertise" is obviously rather subjective, but as I sifted through the nominations, I tried to use some general criteria: Education, professional experience or publication in the area of expertise. So while Eric has a great deal of knowledge on the subject of linguistics, he's definitely not an expert under these standards. However, on when it comes to the workings of the Internet, particularly the DNS, he's definitely an expert, and is recognized by his peers as such.

Once again, one vote per person, please. Any errors or omissions, please email me and I'll try and fix it ASAP.

Such excellence, particularly the many in the fields of law and economics.

I well expect to see former award winners TalkLeft, Orcinus and Informed Consent remain at the top of their critical fields in 2005.

So for 2004, I have to ask myself what was most relevant to informing us. Was it the science of PZ Myers or at Panda's Thumb? The labor stuff of Nathan Newman or Jordan Barab (it SHOULD HAVE been the center of the prez race, imo)? The legal brilliance of Froomkin, Balkin, Publius or Muller? The poll talk of Mark Blumenthal (impressive, but not begun early enough to match the longer efforts of these others)?

I hafta go with economics. Which means there's DeLong, Sawicky, Quiggin, Angry Bear or General Glut to choose from. My own economics is closer to Max than any of them. But in deciphering 'economistese' for us lay people, I think Angry Bear and General Glut have the edge.

My vote will be for General Glut this year.

Very tough choice. My head tells me to go with DeLong or Gen. Glut for economics or Media Matters because it does. My heart goes to Adventus because RMJ's expertise is of a different type altogether.

But I've needed Dr. Cole's experience and expertise more than the others to make some sense of the senseless.

My vote goes to Informed Comment.
