Goodbye to Friends Proximal

Tom and Stephanie came by for dinner last night, before driving off to the Twin Cities and a staged departure from Maine. Good friends are few. We'll see each other again, when Steph comes back for a seminar, when I to to Minneapolis for the traditional alternate-year IETF choice -- freeze or play "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike" like oversized gerbils, and when Steph and Tom come back in Spring for the final move-out.

But we won't work a political campaign together, as candidate and field director and engaged partners, or as field/political/technical directors, as the Democratic Party continues its decades long drift upwards into a pure airwar -- the television plus polling model, abandoning six-figure competitive campaigns run in parallel, and all the voting machines and recounts, for the eight-figure single campaign, because the distance between us will be too great, and the campaigns that could use us won't be able to afford us, and the campaigns that can afford us, are putting all their assets in television and chum-paid drone armies that look no further than top-of-ticket.

Sure, we'll still have each other's blogs, but we've had our last beers together.
