MOST HUMOROUS POST, I would like to direct your attention to Raznor's "Reality-Based" Rants (http://raznor.blogspot.com/) and his almost-as-chilling-as-the-real-thing November 09, 2004 post:
"Breaking News: Bush Appoints the Dread Lord Cthuhlu as New Attorney General"
It's a scream... quite literally.
I sent in most of my nominations yesterday but I relaly wanted to say that I think Steve Gilliard's series on colonialism in history must be the best series. However I don't know if it will count as much of it is taken from other sources with minimal commentary from him at the end. Please consider it. I only wish I remembered how to make a link. My HTML skills suck.

Check out my comparison of American capitalism to the Titanic. Check out my take on America's hypocritical spin on sex - prudishness vs. prurience. Sort of wonky, sort of preachy, sort of New Yorkery, sort of high-handed/high road, it's talk of a better nation.

Here are my nominations in the categories for which I have an opinion. It may look like I'm shilling or spamming for a certain blog, but I'm not. I truly think Orcinus is worthy in several categories. If you had a category for "Most Important Blog", I would nominate it for that, too.
Best Blog
Eschaton. While there are many great blogs that I monitor, only one has consistently been the front-and-center, "must read every day" blog for me in 2004.
Best Writing
Talking Points Memo Not the most humorous, biting, colorful, or flamboyant, but definitely the most clearly and carefully-written blog on the planet, which is very important in these times of deliberate confusion.

Best New Blog: The Common Ills of course! :)
Best Commenter no idea but for laughs I'll toss out Kit Seeyle with her "wonderful" commentary during the debates (posted on NY Times web site).

I almost didn't nominate this blog since there are no comments or trackbacks, but the truth is it's the first one I visit every day.
Best Writing
The Bull Moose
Not sure if he'd describe himself as liberal, but his writing is superb.
Best Series
RTP's Torture Inc.
I'll go out on a limb of shameless self-promotion here and nominate my own series on abuse and torture in the "war on terrorism".
Best Single Issue Blog
Dispatch From The Trenches
Consistently good writing on "the class war by workers on the front lines"
Best Group Blog

Best Expert Blog
Brad DeLong
He demystifies economics and cuts through Republican framing for the non-economists among us.
Best New Blog

On the advice of Wampum, I'm again wading into the pool of shameless self-promotion.
Best Group Blog: Corrente
Posted by: Loudocracy at December 15, 2004 06:36 PMBest Blog: Daily Kos. I like Atrios better than I like Kos, but when you consider the value added by the Kos Kommunity I think that Daily Kos edges out Eschaton overall.
Best Writing: Fafblog! "Dying is easy; comedy is hard."
Best Post: I was inclined to nominate my own election-eve post, "Why I Care," which was the best thing I wrote all year. In all honesty, however, nothing that I wrote - or read - was better than Tbogg's brilliant, beautiful "Exit Interview." Hands down, no contest, the best thing I've read in a long, long while.
Best Series: Again, I was tempted to nominate my own weekly series about beer, "Beer Goggles," but unfortunately I haven't kept up with it for several months now, so...nevermind. Therefore, my nomination goes to Happy Furry Puppy Story Time with Norbizness' semi-regular caption contests, which serve as a model for caption contests throughout West Blogtopia.
Best Single Issue Blog: Riverbend's Baghdad Burning, assuming that "living under the yoke of occupation" qualifies as a single issue.
Best Group Blog: Pandagon, or the american street.
Most Humorous Blog: Lots of good humorous bloggers out there, but the best of them are (in order) Fafblog!, Fafblog!, Fafblog!, and Fafblog!
Most Humorous Post: Whatever they're posting at Fafblog! right now.
Best Expert Blog: I never understand what Brad DeLong is talking about, so I assume he must be an expert. And he's really, really good. So I guess that makes his blog the best expert blog.
Most Deserving of Wider Recognition; Best New Blog: Even though I shamelessly begged my readers to nominate me for one or both of these awards, so far no joy. So I guess I'll have to do it myself: I humbly, humbly nominate Proof Through the Night for one or both of these awards.
Best Commenter: You mean people actually leave comments at some blogs? What will they think of next!

BEST UNUSUAL BLOG (I know you do not have this as a category. I think it should be one)
I would put Busy Busy Busy. Journalist photos placed next to Elton Beards pithy shorter short versions of various articles by William Safire, David Brooks, Krauthammer etc.
James & Elayne are right. Here are my choices.
Best writing: The Common Ills
COMMONILLS
Here's why. Media Matters wrote about NPR using Robert Kagan to comment on John Kerry due to readers' tips. Readers tipped them off that Kagan was married to Victoria Nuland who works for Cheney (deputy advisor on national security).
Read Media Matters article on Kagan -- they don't mention his conflict of interest. The only blog that made this conflict of interest an issue (and held NPR Ombudsman Dvorkin accountable) was The Common Ills.
When everyone was wringing their hands over "Red" state, "Blue" state, only The Common Ills bothered to speak to people in the "Red" states and discover that the Dem party wasn't putting money there. Not just for advertising but even for county headquarters. (This is the Eli thing that Elayne & James mention. He's an elderly man who used to be able to interact there but the Dems didn't even open one in his county this election.)
No one commented on Adam Nagourney & Janet Elder's summary of the NY Times/CBS Poll in terms of the fact that N&E got it wrong. They were selective with what they included. No one even bothered to comment on the questions used in the poll which also had problems. Again, no one but The Common Ills.
They are the only one picking up on Oleg D. Kalugin's comments that have to do with an unsolved murder.
They are the only one pointing out that the Times does not have a policy that when a moderate leaves, you replace that op-ed writer with a moderate. So this notion that Safire means we need another conservative is bunk.
I could go on and on (and feel like I already have). This is the best blog going on right now.
Best Post: I'll vote for Common Ills "When NPR Fails You, Who You Gonna' Call? Not the Ombudsman" just because others have. Personally, I could easily go with the four part installment debunking the NY Times/CBS poll or this one but I'll defer to Elayne and James.
NPRSUX
Best Series: "Red" States series of The Common Ills
I love all of the sections in this series but especially the going over Common Ills gave NYT's Jodi Wilgoren for focusing more on her wedding than on reporting on the Kerry campaign. Loved it so much I'll quote the beginning of the Wilgoren section from Part IV:
"My engagement was first announced on Howard Dean's campaign Web log. I addressed and stamped my save-the-date cards at a hotel in Washington while John Kerry spent a slow weekend attending the dedication of the World War II memorial. "
On that self-important note, so begins Wilgoren's piece (in the style section of the Times) entitled "View: The Wedding Candidate on the Trail" (October 24, 2004).
Make no mistake, there were hardships Wilgoren had to endure to do . . . well, her job:
"Like the Tuesday evening in October when Mr. Kerry's motorcade pulled up to a hotel in Colorado and I filed the third rewrite of that day's bickering over Iraq from the lobby, only to find on my vibrating cellphone the distraught voice of Julie, the manager of the Chinatown restaurant where we were having our night-before-nuptials dinner. The good news, as I told Gary long-distance a few minutes later: 20 percent off, a free Champagne toast, and dinner on the house as soon as I was back in town. The bad? Someone had double-booked the party room with the dramatic downtown view, so our 100 out-of-town guests would be shunted to the L-shaped dining area across the hall."
Bickering over Iraq? That about sums up the depth of reporting she "filed." A minor issue to the country (the seating of Wilgoren's guests) is explained in more detail than any of her "bickering" over Iraq coverage on the campaign trail. And why? Is her personal event far more important to the country, the Times and the world than what goes on in a war torn country where casualities mount with every week? Media damage.
and this section too:
I mean, I'm glad that Wilgoren reports that other reporters on the campaign trail understood when they heard her on the phone having "arguments about procession order, catering costs and what we are going to do about a last name, they are also a ready-made focus group for all my bridal angst." But I'm not really sure such a confession improves one's view of the working press.
Did no one ever holler, "Hey Wilgoren, pipe down! I'm trying to work here! You know this election is a little more important to the country than your wedding!"
Hell, I love the whole thing! The Common Ills nailed Wilgoren on her wedding planner versus her notes on the Kerry campaign. The whole series was a must read but if you loathe Wilgoren like I do, Part IV is a must read!
Best Single Issue Blog: The Daily Howler is da bomb!
You can't participate in the social security discussion without reading the Howler.
Most Humorous Blog: Ad Nags. But mainly for "That's Kooky Cokie to you!" Check out the first response on this one
Most Humorous Post: Again, I'm torn between two. "Bullies Without Borders" from today or "Coup: Today Show Seizes Control of the New York Times' Front Page!" both from The Common Ills. Since Elayne & James went with "Coup," I will too.
COUP
It's funny, it's true. Love the line about when NYT is bored with being a paper and decides to cross dress as a tabloid!
Most Deserving of Wider Recognition: The Common Ills!
COMMONILLS
Is anyone else even following the revelation that
Oleg D. Kalugin apparently let slip to the NYT in Weds.' paper regarding the assination of Georgi I. Markov? Nope. Which is why I go to The Common Ills first thing every time.
Best Expert Blog: Dahr Jamail absolutely. He's unembedded and doing a dangerous job. Give it up to Dahr!
DAHR
Best Expert Blog: Dahr Jamail's Iraq Dispatches
Best New Blog: The Common Ills
Agreed!
Did anyone else go through Simon Rosenberg's blogs, interviews and writings? No, only Common Ills when they came up with "Questions for the Questionable Simon Rosenberg." There's a reason Atrios & Kos aren't trusted. They initially tried to pooh-pah the Ohio vote and tell us to move on and they've forced DLC Simon down our throats. (He's DLC as late as May of this year and only The Common Ills told you that.)
A lot of blogs have gotten long in the tooth and seem to be following the Cokie Roberts path of "I know best." That's troubling when you consider that we make or break them by our visits. But they've grown very fond of the limelight and apparently are hesitant to take on Rosenberg or Kagan or whomever for fear of not getting booked on Air America. The Common Ills tells it like it is. And how many bloggers will admit "I could be wrong"? You hear that on CI all the time. Ain't no David Corn in dat house!
This is the blog to read. FAIR, Ms. Musing, Liberal Oasis and Buzzflash have all linked to at least one item from this blog and it's only two months old. (I learned about via buzz when buzz linked to the NPR story. Wish there was an award that could go to Buzzflash or Thom Hartman or Maureen Farrell.)
It deserves the awards but even if doesn't get them, I'd recommend everyone bookmark this site and start following it. Even my journalism prof pushes this site. If you're left, this is your blog!

Best Writing: (tie) I'll give one to Digby at Hullaballoo, one to Jeanne at Body & Soul, and consider this: with Digby, Julia of Sisyphus Shrugged, Nichael Berube, Jesus General, Fafblog's members, Echidne, Melanie of Just a Bump on the Beltway, Dave Johnson of Seeing the Forest, Barbara of Mahablog, Mark Kleiman, Tom Burka and several equally good others .... and earlier this year, Jeralyn of Talk Left, Bill Scher of Liberal Oasis, Susie of Suburban Guerrilla, Emma of Late Night Thoughts, South Knox Bubba, I certainly think The American Street deserves one for Best Blog Writing. (What, do I need to recruit James Wolcott and Jeanne too to make the point?)
Best Expert Blog: (tie)I think the folks at Labor Blog deserve one, Charles Kuffner deserves one for coverage of Texas politics, SKBubba for Tennessee Politics, Beautiful Horizons for Latin America coverage, and it's time Jack Balkin wins one for Law.
Best Single Issue Blog: How To Save The World (environment)
Best Humor Blog: Very tough call with all the humorists on our team including Jesus' General and Fafblog and Michael Berube. So I'm going to spread the love elsewhere a bit and make it a (tie) for Tom Burka of Opinions You Should Have, and Ayn Clouter's Blog and TBOGG.
Most Humorous Post: I have so many here, I can't choose one.
Best Group Blog: (tie) The American Street, Seeing The Forest, The Left Coaster, Pacific Views, Best of the Blogs, Wampum and Political Puzzle.
Most Deserving of Wider Recognition (tie) Suburban Guerrilla, Norwegianity, Legal Fiction, Cool Patience, The Niggerati Network, Negrophile,MouseMusings and Sisyphus Shrugged.
Best New Blog of 2004: (tie) Legal Fiction, Fafblog, BlondeSense, and The American Street

Best Post: TBOGG's tribute to his Dad
Best Commenter: eRobin, Emma, and Peggy (of A Moveable Beast)
STRONGLY BEGGING YOU to make a Hall of Fame with the first inductee: Aaron Hawk of Uppity Negro
Hey Everyone, have you seen these hotties?

This is a hard one, but I'll have to go for Confined Space by a nose.
Best New Blog
The country is going to hell in a handbasket, but one issue that seems to be ignored, in a political, "we've got to organize" sense, is Public Health. So I'll have to go with Effect Measure

Posted by: Patrick Rogers at December 17, 2004 10:14 AMI think Bloggg should be nominated for New Blog and for Expert because of her help to the autistic community. She takes the whole month of April and posts every day for autism awareness. She also helps people offline, she helped my daughter and her son.
Posted by: sharon at December 17, 2004 10:31 AMThe Common Ills should get every award possible. In a fair world, it would. But after Nov. 2004, we don't live in a fair world. So I'll just say no matter who counts the ballots, The Common Ills is the best blog to come along in forever. I've lost complete faith in Kos & Atrios who seem to have been exposed to too much limelight and now see themselves as the "deans" of the blog world.
They can see themselves however they want. But they're about as useful to the world as the "dean" of the Washington press corp -- David Broder. Going after Rush for having a potty mouth, are we now? Well good to know that Kos deals with all the really important issues.
I'll never forget his "move on" speech on The Majority Report about how we just needed to get over Ohio. Kos, how much did the DLC pay you for those remarks? And how much for becoming Simon Rosenberg's cheerleader?
Like Cher post-infomercial, Kos, you've blown your credibility.
Today's Daily Blog Headline: "Kos & Atrios's bodies were found today. Both apparently died sometime in June of 2004. No one noticed due to the fact that the DLC provided typists to fill in.
Simon Rosenberg is charged with penning valentines to himself. . . ."
I forgot to add the best Commentor: MaryScott OConner over at Kos

Emphasis Added by Rob Salkowitz
I'll give Rob the highest compliment I possibly can: His blog is exactly what my blog would be if I had the time, patience and writing ability to do a blog like that. Well, that and the in-depth knowledge of a wide variety of policy matters. And the restraint to keep from saying "fuck" every three sentences...
(sigh)
Posted by: Toast at December 17, 2004 06:48 PMI'd like to nominate www.BradBlog.com also at www.bradblogtoo.blogspot.com as the Best Blog.
His reporting on election fraud 2004 has been amazing. If I could only look at one blog a day it would be his.

Don't worry --- when it's all said and done, we'll get lit and whine & bitch and probably send the Mormons to fafblog's house.
