Feministe's Shrimping, An Approximate Reconstruction of a Horrifying Conversation. "Maybe I'll shrimp my wife while I'm up there."
Best Writing:
Feministe - Constantly giving me something to think about when I'm not jealous of her writing talents.
Random Thoughts on Politics - Constantly one of the most informed and articulate bloggers out there.
The News Writer - A cable news writer's take on the news.
Best Group Blog:
Needlenose - Swopa's updates on Iraq alone take the cake.
Progressive Blog Alliance - Any blogger in the Alliance is allowed to post, so it's always filled with informed opinions.
Blondesense - Irrevent, informed, and downright funny. BS has some of the best comment threads.

The Sideshow
Best political Atrios
Kos
Best writing: James Wolcott
Body & Soul
Best legal: TalkLeft
Best Blog
I love Atrios, but for the sake of new blood, Daily Kos.
Best Writing
So many excellent writers, but James Wolcott gets my nomination.
Best Post
Steve Gilliard's long string of posts over a week or so on the history of Colonialism.
Best Series
It's one of my favorites for other categories, but Attaturk at Rising Hegemon's regular picture captions are fantastic, but maybe not. So is Holden's Obsession with the Gaggle. TBogg's America's worst mother.
But I'll nominate the serious Orcinus series on the Rise of Fascism.
Best Single Issue Blog
Juan Cole is indespensible for Middle East coverage.

THE SHADOW PRESIDENT:
http://selfmadepundit.blogspot.com/2004_02_08_selfmadepundit_archive.html#107668839002832255
In The Peculiar Rules I review the rules Bush and Cheney imposed on the September 11 Commission for their joint appearance, such as Rule No.2: "If Cheney leaves the room to go to the bathroom, Bush may also leave the room or hide under the table, at his option, until Cheney returns."
In The Shadow President, I discuss the little-known theory that Bush is really the early 20th Century crimefighter known as the Shadow. This theory explains that Bush has used his supernatural power to cloud men's mind to skate through a lifetime of incompetence and blunders.

More Nominations
I made nominations in some categories in the first post, but passed on others that I wanted to think about. I've decided on a few more.
Best Series
1. Eric Muller & Greg Robinson's complete and devastating take down of Michelle Malkin's polemic on WWII Japanese internment. This series speaks for itself.
2. Josh Marshall's crack reporting of the Al Qaqaa issue. Josh had the story on his blog a day before the Times break, and chased every detail over one week with a thoroughness one seldom sees, even in some of the best blog reporting. A total of more than 40 posts. There is no link to the series, but you can use the search function ["al qaqaa"] or follow the story from the very first post here.
Blog Most deserving of wider recognition
1. Rahul Mahajan
2. Jack Balkin
3. George Williams
I'm sure they've already received nominations, but...best writing: Hullabaloo; Bob Harris.
Posted by: Bobo at December 14, 2004 02:51 PMI nominate Norwegianity by Mark Gisleson for Best Blog.
He has been a valuable resource, the best political/arts blog in the Upper Midwest over the past year. It's smart, it's aggressive, and it's wide-ranging -- he is as likely to be talking about Russian Jazz as Alberto Gonzalez.
Best - Among the "bigs," I'd have to say either Eschaton or Dkos, as they're still my first reads daily. On the smaller, yet established, side, I enjoy Steve Gilliard and Rittenhouse Review, Pandagon and Hullabaloo.
Writing - Body and Soul and Rittenhouse are consistently excellent
Post - Several have stuck with me this year (and sorry I don't html):
Body and Soul, "And in my thirst," 05/21/04
Tbogg, "Exit Interview" and "Actually I meant to post...," 08/04
Baghdad Burning, "Dedicated to the memory of L.A.S.," 02/15/04
Baghdad Burning, "American elections," 10/25/04
First Draft, "Let there be light," 08/22/04 by Athenae
Series - Probably "Holden's Obsession with the Gaggle" at First Draft
Athenae's "In America" are good, too
Single Issue - Today in Iraq, TalkLeft
Group - Corrente, Crooked Timber, Liberal Street Fighter
Most Humorous - Tbogg is always good for a smile; The Poor Man
Most Humorous Post - Pandagon, "Insert snarky headline here," 04/04, if only for the comments
Wider Recognition - Slacktivist, Suburban Guerilla, Just a Bump in the Beltway
Expert - Have to go with Juan Cole at Informed Comment
New (Brand New) - Adventus
Commentor - Robert M. Jeffers (though he just branched out to Adventus)
And, gone but not forgotten - Counterspin Central

Posted by: mavin at December 14, 2004 03:12 PMI am pleased and honored to see that several people have already nominated our little corner of the web at ACSBlog, but I'd like to give another mention to a series we recently ran called "Clarence Thomas' America".
Justice Thomas is not only the most conservative member of the Court, he is also the most willing to discard well established law, no matter how venerable, and replace it with his own personal ideology. Should his opinions ever become law, it would mean the end of the New Deal, the return of legalized whites only lunch counters, the legalization of state-sponsored theocracy, and the end to campaign finance regulation.
Short of occational discussions of Roe v. Wade or maybe medical marijuana, the judiciary is often the most ignored branch of government. This is no doubt because what goes on in our courts is often very technical and difficult to understand without a legal education, but it is still no less significant that the actions of the other two branches of government.
In writing Clarence Thomas' America, we at ACSBlog hoped to explain in relatively simple terms just what is at stake with our courts. It is our attempt to bridge the gap between lawyers and the rest of the progressive community.

There were several of RP's I thought of, but this one really stuck out in my mind; it's perfectly indicative of the way he tends to make me laugh and cry at the same time.
Best Series: World O’ Crap’s Deep Thoughts, by Peggy Noonan
I know most of the nominations will cover the serious stuff, so I needed to give s.z. her due. This is one of the funniest concepts ever, and it never ceases to amuse.
Best Single Issue Blog: BradBlog
It's been a single issue blog lately, and the amount of work he's done on the voter stuff is simply amazing.

Best New Blog: Shakespeare’s Sister
I had to give myself a bit of recognition, along with the other contributors to Shakespeare's Sister.

If the barrier to adding extra categories is having the time to evaluate the blogs, why not take nominations for additional judges?
You could ask past winners to do some of the judging.
Or you could make some categories determined by popular vote.

Should blogs with resources be considered separately from other blogs?
Kevin Drum gets a paycheck for blogging. Is it fair to compare him to a hobby blogger?

While I'm adding categories...
Should the technical side of blogging get some recognition? What's the best technical innovation in the last year? Scoop has added features. Has other blogging software been updated? What's the best new feature that's been added to blogging software in the last year?
Posted by: Carl Nyberg at December 14, 2004 04:33 PMI see a lot of the other posts I was considering up here, but I don't see If Wishes Were Horses, Beggars Would Ride from John and Belle have a blog for Most Humorous Post
Posted by: julia at December 14, 2004 04:35 PMCarl, we take the thousands of nominations and break them into their categories, then repost for a popular vote for 10-12 finalists.
Then put up all the finalists, with little tidbits about their blog or particular post. Once again, we hold a popular vote for the top spot.
All votes are counted by hand, as is all the sorting of nominations, gathering of missing URLs and info on the authors and posts. There is no real "judging" - it is all popular vote, but it is not mechanized.
We really enjoy doing it, but there are limitations. All three of us have families, including autistic children, and other responsibilities. We also would like to continue to write non-Koufax posts ;-).
The awards are meant to be fun - for us as well as everyone. If people feel other categories are absolutely necessary, then we'd happily promote any other blog awards which chooses to utilize them.

I nominate Orcinus (Neiwert) for every category except humor.
I hate Informed Consent because it is biased without taking responsibility for its own biases.
Aravosis blog (Americablog?) has scoops regularly.
James Wolcott for best writing!!!!
Hullabaloo for most passionate blog.
Eschaton & Daily Kos have gotten too big for their britches -- too busy revelling in their celebrity. Their blogs have lost any personal touch they once had. Some of us want quirky personality, not machine-generated activism.
Kevin Drum for good sense and cool head on serious issues.
Tom Burka for humor.

Most Humorous Post: FAFBLOG, NO MISSILE LEFT BEHIND:
http://fafblog.blogspot.com/2004_12_12_fafblog_archive.html#110322567673677768
no missile left behind
So yesterday the missile defense system failed again. Now there’s a lotta negative nancies out there talkin about how our missile shield is a costly Cold War boondoggle that has wasted billions of dollars, alienated our allies and started a new and pointless arms race. But this kinda talk is very destructive an costly to our missiles, who love us an want to do the very best they can for us.
The first thing we should do is let our missile system know that mistakes aren’t bad, they’re just learning experiences. Kudos to Richard A. Lehner of the Missile Defense Agency for letting our missiles know that we learned “quite a bit” from the latest missile test. There you go missiles! We’ll do better next time. You might even get off the launching pad!
If we are negative towards our missile systems, callin em “failures” an “disasters” an tellin em we wish they’d never been funded, well that’ll just make things worse! We need to love an encourage our missiles. They need our help an support to learn an grow. With a few kind words an some hard work an another 4.8 billion dollars these plucky little can-do missiles should be able to take some serious steps toward self-improvement!
Oh I know what you’re thinkin. “Fafnir” you’re thinkin “we’ve already spent $80 billion on this and it’s gotten us nowhere.” Well you can’t just buy your missiles’ success yknow. You need to make it a personal investment. Read to your missiles. Ask em how they did at their test launch. Tuck them in at night. Make sure they know that you love them an support them no matter what. An make they know that it’s not their fault you broke up with your allies. Just tell em “Daddy an Europe still love you, they just aren’t committing troops together anymore.”
It’s never too late for a second chance with love. And if we don’t give that second chance to our missiles, who will we give it to?
