December 13, 2004 October is Koufax Pledge Drive month

The 2004 Koufax Awards – Nominations Are Open

Nominations are now open for the 2004 Koufax Awards. This is the third year of the awards. The 2002 winners may be found here. The 2003 winners are listed here.

The Koufax Awards are named for Sandy Koufax, one of the greatest left handed pitchers of all time. They are intended to honor the best of the left of blogtopia (ysitp). At its core, the Koufax Awards are meant to be an opportunity to say nice things about your favorite bloggers and to provide a bit of recognition for the folks who provide us with information, insight, and entertainment usually for little or no renumeration. The awards are supposed to be fun for us and fun for you.

Please try not to take the idea of winning and losing too seriously. We hope to help build and promote a feeling of community among lefty bloggers. The primary rules of the contest are be nice and have fun.

The awards occur in three stages. First, we take nominations. You may make a nomination by leaving a comment to this post or by sending an email to me or to MB at the addresses listing here at Wampum. Self nominations are encouraged. If you do not want to nominate yourself via a public comment, send an email.

We will go through the nominations and post a list of nominated blogs with a link and a brief description of each. As there are many nominations, we would appreciate it if you left a url to the blog and a brief statement of what you find pleasing about the site.

Once we post the list of nominees, voting takes place (again by email or comment) to determine the finalists. We usually include 8-10 finalists in each category by looking for natural breakpoints in the voting.

We will post a list of finalists for each category and take votes among those listed. The winners are determined by that voting.

This year, a Sandy will be awarded in each of twelve categories. Those categories, along with past winners are listed below:

Best Blog
This category seeks to recognize the best overall work across the entire year. Which lefty blog do you consider indispensable? Atrios won each of the last two years. Is he still king of the hill?

Best Writing
This category seeks to recognize the best writing by a lefty blogger. The fabulous Jeanne D'arc of Body and Soul won in 2002. In 2003, the Sandy for Best Writing was won by the now departed and much missed Billmon of Whiskey Bar.

Best Post
This category is intended to identify the one post of the year that stands above all others for originality, insight, and writing. In 2002, this category was won by Jim Capozzola of The Rittenhouse Review for his post entitled Al Gore and the Alpha Girls. Last year the best post was Billmon's What a Tangled Web We Weave, the WMD quote post. This is one category in which it is most appropriate to nominate your own work. After all, you know your posts better than anyone else.

Best Series
This category includes both regular features (such as Liberal Oasis' Sunday Talk Show Breakdown or Holden's Obsession with the Gaggle) as well as the best coverage of a single issue (such as Avedon's continuing coverage of election irregularities). This is another category where we want you to send us your best stuff. Atrios won in 2002 for his coverage of the Trent Lott controversy. Last year, David Neiwert of Orcinus won for Rush, Newspeak and Facism.

Best Single Issue Blog
This category is for blogs that focus exclusively or almost exclusively on a single specific area such as politics, economics, law, etc. It has been won the last two years by the incomparable Jeralyn Merritt of Talk Left for her coverage of legal issues.

Best Group Blog
A group is defined as two or more regular contributors. Last year, Daily Kos received the most votes in the category despite not actually being a group blog (or at least Kos left a comment that he did not consider it a group blog). I then deemed that the award would go to the entire Kos community, including Kos, the guest bloggers, the diarists, the commenters, and the readers. This year, let's nominate true group blogs, please.

Most Humorous Blog
This is a self explanatory category. In 2002, Adam Felber of Fanatical Apathy won. Last year, Tbogg carried home the prize. Who has consistently made you laugh this year?

Most Humorous Post
In 2003, the funniest post was Jesse Taylor of Pandagon's parody of Peggy Noonan. Last year, it was Atrios' classic Preznit giv me turkee. What post made you laugh out loud this year? If you have read or written anything particularly humorous this year, please send us a link.

Most Deserving of Wider Recognition
This category was added last year at the request of the readers. It seeks to honor those bloggers who are consistently good but for whatever reason do not receive the recognition they deserve. Last year it was won by a South Knox Bubba who, by virtue of the award, should no longer be eligible (he is eligible for Best Blog of course). Who do you think is this year's undiscovered gem?

Best Expert Blog
This is another category added last year at the request of the readers. It seeks to honor those who bring particular expertise, by way of knowledge, experience, or academic achievement, to a particular topic. Last year it was won by University of Michigan history professor Juan Cole who writes about the Middle East at Informed Comment. Who is this year's best expert?

Best New Blog
This category recognizes new members of the community of left of center bloggers. In 2002, there were almost no lefty bloggers at the beginning of the year. Atrios, for instance, began in the spring of 2002. That year, to qualify as new, the blog had to have begun in September or later. Last year, I moved the qualifying date to July 1. With the growth of the community, any blogger whose first post was in 2004 will be considered new. In 2002, the award went to Roger Ailes (the funny, snarky one). In 2003, the award went to the blog of the DNC, Kicking Ass.

One of the real joys of hosting these awards is becoming familiar with new blogs. It is no longer possible for any one person to keep up with all of the entrants. This is a great category for self nominations. Who is the best of the new crop of lefty bloggers?

Best Commenter
This category is for those who post comments on other people's blogs. In 2002, the award was won by Digby who now graces us with his insight at Hullabaloo. Last year, the award was won by John Emerson, a/k/a Zizka, who now writes at Seeing The Forest. Who was the best commenter of 2004?

Those are the twelve categories. If you think we should add another or restore one that has been eliminated, don't be shy, just leave a comment and we will consider it.

Hosting the Koufax Awards is a lot of work. Providing a link when making a nomination, particularly if you are nominating a particular post or series of posts, helps a lot. Last year, the onslaught saturated our link. Due to the generosity of our readers (and donations are still welcome, as we fronted much of the cost) and Eric's expertise, we hope that will not happen this year.

We do all of the work of the awards by hand. That has advantages and disadvantages. One of the disadvantages is that I tend to make mistakes. When I make one this year, please let me know I will do my best to correct it.

Please remember that this is an effort to build a sense of community. Let's all try to have fun. Okay, send us some nominations.

Update: The comments section is getting a bit unwieldy, so we've opened a new nominating open thread here.

I am not permitted to nominate but it would be a shame if Steve Soto of the Leftcoaster' s series on the Gallup poll was not nominated for best Series (http://www.theleftcoaster.com/). Similarly Eriposte's http://vote2004.eriposte.com/ work on 2004 election irregularities should be noted.

Please bring back "Best Series" so someone can nominate my "Silly Site o' the Day" series, the only way I could possibly make the nominations for this past year. :)

I'd also like to nominate Fafblog as Most Humorous.

For Best Posts, I've saved 'em up for the year in my Bloglines clipping file for easier access:

- David Neiwert's Rise of Pseudo-Fascism series has been riveting. I also liked his Media Revolt: A Manifesto.

- Jeanne d'Arc's Politics and Poetry

- Digby's A Respectful Dissent, Two Faces. One Public, One Private. One Phony, One Real., and Torturing the Wurlitzer

- Bob Harris' Our Savage Numbness on Tom Tomorrow's blog

- Lesley's Censorship vs. Freedom of Association

Other categories as I think of them.

I'd like a shot at Best Series, for my saturation coverage of connections between right wing extremists and the challenger in my local house race. I take all the credit for the fact that the incumbent Democrat won handily.

It started here: http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/more-dirty-politics.html
Built a head of steam here http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/more-on-kobach.html
and continued http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/apologies-for-long-post-before.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/more-on-anti-immigrant-racism.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/dennis-moore-loves-america.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/more-on-anti-immigrant-racism.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/simpsons-on-politics.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/what-does-this-even-mean.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/beating-extremism.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/pratts-influence-on-politicians-im.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/john-tanton.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/pratt-and-theocracy.html
http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/radio-star.html
Eventually, my research took me to a second race http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/10/take-fight-nationwide.html
Ending with a letter to the editor of the Kansas City Star from the congressman http://jgrr.blogspot.com/2004/11/moore-follows-up.html

I would summarize the broad value of this series by pointing out that the background for my race in Kansas was easy to apply to a race in New Jersey. The people backing a lot of the most extreme republicans are the same, so digging into one campaign is a microcosm of the battle we all fought last November, and will fight again in two years. Plus, my series was interesting enough that I got invited onto a local radio show.

Perhaps this isn't the kind of series you have in mind, but my favorite funny blog, Jesus' General, deserves a nomination for his frequent e-mails to various right-wing newsmakers. A couple have even responded, such as the GOP senate campaign leader who at least appeared to take the General's offer to run against Obama seriously. Sometimes, these e-mails are just over the top; but at their best, they have that wonderful quality of satire where it's not always easy to distinguish the General's faux nuttiness from the real, earnest nuttiness of a true wingnut. And although this category will probably be filled with "serious" blogs rather than funny ones, the General's e-mails also serve another function of satire, and quite a serious one, in alerting us to and getting us angry about the latest right-wing outrage--which is what many serious lefty blogs are all about.

If you don't like what you do, what are you doing it for?

So I nominate my blog, Really Not Worth Archiving for deserving wider recognition. (Sometimes linked as "Frank Lynch" or "Samuel Johnson.")

And I nominate my post playing down the intensity of the Abu Ghraib coverage, sooo complained about by those who thought we should be paying more attention to Nick Berg's beheading.

Catblogging!

We need a award for catblogging (which should be defined as animal pictures posted on a recurring basis, so as to include Tbogg's basset blogging and Pharyngula's cephlapod blogging).

Good thing there's no award for best html. I gave you a link to an entry using the url on my hard drive. Ugh. Let's try that nomination for best entry again.

"And I nominate my post playing down the intensity of the Abu Ghraib coverage, sooo complained about by those who thought we should be paying more attention to Nick Berg's beheading."

I'm not even going to try - there are just so many good ones and I can never make myself pick a "best" one.

But I know putting links in this thread will generate interest for some people, so I'd like everyone to go read Peevish and try to encourage her to get back to blogging. I really miss her, and she hasn't announced her retirement again, so maybe a rash of hits will get her back into it.

The Mahablog has been doing some great stuff lately.

I've recently discovered Everythingisruined and I've been finding it pretty good.

I think That Colored Fella's Blog is pretty good, too.

And finally, I want everyone to remember that I have a new address and to change your links and favorites if you haven't yet.

too damn lazy to come up with the other stuff, although prometheus6 probably did the best something or other...but i'd have to look it up. if someone more industrious/organized than me goes over to prometheus6.org they ought to find maybe half a dozen series in his "best of P6" column that'll knock you on your keister.

philalethes' nominations are predictably difficult to impugn. however, atrios doesn't need any more traffic - it's like giving more golden globe awards to jack nicholson, in other words, give it a rest. whatever, i'll lockstep with the pro-atrios contingent if only to avoid the flames...plus i spend altogether too much time there to try and play devil's advocate.

Perhaps a Best Interview category...

If so, I'd submit my interviews with:

  • Former GOP Congressman and 1980 Independent Candidate John Anderson
  • Former Democratic Senator and two-time candidate for President Gary Hart
If you don't want such a category, either post could work for best post (though I'm not pushing for that). Posted by: Jonathan Singer at December 13, 2004 08:08 PM

I can't explain it, but I feel an overwhelming urge to nominate the leftcoaster's blog (http://www.theleftcoaster.com/) for best series on the Gallup poll.

For single issue blog, I'd like to nominate Eriposte's "Vote Watch 2004" (http://vote2004.eriposte.com/).

Enormous thanks for the hours of manual labor that's going to go into this process. It is much appreciated and gets a lot of lesser-known blogs noticed for the first time.

Hmm. I need some time to think before I decide. In the meantime, though, I'd like to make the same suggestion I did last year: Eliminate any paid ringers from the competition (i.e Kevin Drum). Blogging for tips takes a certain insane dedication that deserves recognition. Writing for a paycheck, on the other hand, is... well, just another gig.
