Red Acres (01 Nov)

Triballaw has been wicked busy over the weekend. I've had to unstick messages, approve posts, add subscribers, and gateway between open and closed lists.

Friday there was news from the Mdewakanton Dakota case, a complex case involving the federal trust responsibiliity when land is taken from one group of Indians and given to other groups of Indians (part of the 1862 Minnesota Dakota War, which featured the largest mass hanging in US history).

Also Friday Fair Political Practices Commission v. Santa Rosa Indian Community of the Santa Rosa Rancheria joined Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians v. Superior Court, a pair of Tribal Sovereign Immunity From Political Reform Act cases, awaiting review by the California Supreme Court after a divided Appellate Panel found that California may regulate campaign expenditures by Tribes. There is divided opinion in TL on the wisdom of a "strict Sovereignty" approach to political interactions between Tribes and the inferior jurisdictions (states) of the United States.

Also Friday the SacBee carried the story that the San Manuel Band Hired Jesse Ventura to Slam Ahnuld in Prop. 70 fight. The current Republican Governor of California is attempting what the prior Republican Governor attempted, getting 25% of the revenues from Indian Gaming in California. The better position is that Tribes should pay the corporate tax rate at just under 10%.

Then the political traffic kicked in:

Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) has not been passed. Please remind your family and friends to VOTE.

Standing Rock Rez voters and which state (see archives/1324.html, line dancing in the dakotas).

The Native VOTE compilation (think of ABC's The Note, but for IC).

The National Head Start Association press release.

A GOTV plea for remote phone banks in Florida (a tactic that put thousands of calls into Oklahoma and New Mexico for Clark and against Dean).

The 60 Minutes report on failure to protect the troops (that really doesn't play well in IC).

The Bush record on Native Americans compilation (think of League of Women Voters, but for IC).

John Kerry's address National Council of American Indians from last November.

Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) "Indian Voters Must Be Aware of, Defy Possible Intimidation".

A note that Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and the GOP Counsel want the FBI to Investigate/Intimidate the GOTV at the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

The MoveOn.Org PAC note "6 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE ON TUESDAY!" (not 7, so you know they're not Indians).

During the primary season there were Dean people who just didn't get it, this note is simply to provide a data point. TL is busy with message and tactical GOTV traffic. The rest of IC is probably running about the same. Kitakitamatsinopowaw folks.

I'm no big fan of Ahhhhnold, but he's not trying to get 25%, he's saying to vote no on that one. He's saying it would mess up the compacts he has negotiated. Which I haven't seen, but anyway...
