Posted by: Honorable Minority at January 25, 2004 12:31 PMAtrios Eschaton. consistently brilliant and timely. others are all great, but his is my first page I view in the morning, and last I view at night.
Posted by: Katie at January 25, 2004 12:35 PMAnother toughy. Even though I comment more at Atrios, and probably read it more frequently throughout the day, I gotta go with Daily Kos. Posted by: NTodd at January 25, 2004 12:37 PMThese great blogs are not in competition with each other. In my mind they all add something important. But, since I have to choose I prefer the in depth research that Orcinus consistantly provides.

Posted by: NTodd at January 25, 2004 12:38 PMSorry for the double post. I'm not trying to stuff the ballot box! :-)
Posted by: NTodd at January 25, 2004 12:42 PMBilmon has the best in-depth analysis. Atrios the best breadth of coverage and not to mention humor.
Dkos is a specialist "best of breed" blog with focus on politics/campaign coverage. Check it regularly and is good for late breaking news. Also, has innovative Diaries which are useful for picking up on 2nd tier stories which Atrios also does well.
TPM and Calpundit are great but a little skewed to the moderate political center for my taste. Atrios also has more coverage of media which is especially relevant today with its biased coverage of news. TPM does have the best "inside the beltway" coverage due to his proximity and sources which are invaluable for breaking scandal stories in particular.
Atrios wins on frequency of viewership alone.
"I am Atrios" is our rallying cry.

All deserve the award. But I go for Orinicus. The amount of original research he publishes on his blog is astounding.
Posted by: Moniker at January 25, 2004 12:57 PMGeez, very tough. Atrios is the most fun - but I'm going to vote for Kos simply for how he is changing the whole game. Comprehensive, threaded comments, diaries...
Kos.
Posted by: Opus at January 25, 2004 12:57 PMCalpundit--Very informative on a wide rage of issues; he doesn't froth at the mouth, and so he's not tiresome about what most of us in the choir already think anyway (Yes--YAWN--we are outraged--we need level-headed factoids airing stories of interest to us more than hormonally charged posturing), and I think his level-headed queries and attitudes are something to strive for, especially for those of us who may be latently hormonally charged anyway. Power on, Calpundit. You look like a square, but I'm beginning to respect you for it--dare to be square, wide-ranging, and really, really smart.

I would put Kos first, but the topic breadth isn't there. (I'm also going to put Kos down for Best Group Blog.) Atrios' comments boards are weak compared to Kos and CalPundit. Atrios can go overboard on the snarky minutiae, but he can also be pretty insightful. Anyway, they all do an amazing job.
I just wonder how they get by financially with all that blogging. They all only recently starting having a significant amount of advertising, right?

Posted by: jackson at January 25, 2004 06:56 PMAtrios' Eschaton - I agree with most of what has been written above about the value and excellence of all those nominated, but I feel most at home at atrios' whilst a big backyard party goes on. I smile, I laugh at the comment threads, I go check out the topics and insights of others I heard about at Atrios.
Reading Atrios alerts me to other sources of
coverage of issues. Finger on the pulse as pointers to the absurd, the passing outrage,
plus where to turn for more in-depth coverage of ongoing themes.
Atrios style and tone is also charming and gracious - I perceive him as a wise and diplomatic ally of others who are involved and outspoken, in a way I cannot credit anyone else for being. Not meant as a slight of others, its just the nature of his blog and perspective. I an speaking as an avid reader, rare participant of discussions on the blogs.

BTW - Calpundit may have placed higher, but I can only access it at home - the damn filtering software at work blocks it completely as "not work related" (TPM is blocked too, but not completely - I am warned, but, unlike Calpundit, can choose to click through if I am on break or lunch)
Posted by: Democarp at January 25, 2004 08:29 PMAtrios's Eschaton is No. 1, with Josh Marshall's Talkingpointsmemo.com a close second.

For its sheer velocity and technical virtuosity.
But Calpundit, Billmon, TPM... all brilliant. Argh.
Next you'll be asking me which is my favorite child. All are deserving. I have to use criteria other than quality because they all have it. Atrios I'll eliminate because he won last year. Marshall because no comments. dKos because I don't have a handle on his new site yet (OK, I'm slow). Orcinus is good but not enough community for me. Billmon isn't frugle with the shots and Talkleft is indispensible in dispensing the law but I'll pound the Drum for Calpundit this year. Just don't call me a cat person.

Eschaton
Posted by: aks at January 26, 2004 09:20 AMEschaton -- he's the gold standard, and I start from his blogroll.
Posted by: Jim Shirk at January 26, 2004 09:24 AMTPM gets my vote - because JM does great interviews and led me to Juan Cole and I like his book reviews. I will be curious to see how TPM fares once the elections are over. Last year The Agonist was the blog I began with - this year it is TPM. I love Eschaton best and think he is probably the nicest most passionate and compassionate guy in blogland but I just can't keep up with him all the time - the breadth and the cryptic references are just too much somedays. I give money to Eschaton's causes but TPM gets the vote for now.

Posted by: Kathy at January 26, 2004 07:30 PMThere's not one listed that doesn't deserve it; what a hard choice! Ok, for depth, Orcinus, for scope, Atrios. All of the rest are on my daily essentials list as well, though, how can I slight them?

Atrios!!

Posted by: Mitch Wagner at January 26, 2004 08:40 PMEschaton is my first stop, like many others here have said....who else has a new post every 20 minutes?
Enjoy all the finalist blogs, although Kevin Drum strikes me more as a centrist than a lefty.
Orcinus for depth, Calpundit for breadth, Whisky Bar for originality. And they really post; they don't just plug in links to other posters.

Posted by: braindekay at January 27, 2004 10:49 AMCalPundit is best. He upholds the classic Democratic/centrist position (whether he realizes or IDs with that or not) in a way that chips away at the neocons and plutocrats without being scary and shrill. I love in particular the post:
CONNECTIONS....
...
The problem is not just one of social justice, either. One of the counterintuitive facets of the U.S. economy that various pundits and researchers keep independently "discovering" — usually with a tone of dismayed wonder — is that nearly all economic indicators in the past half century have been stronger under Democrats than Republicans. The data is hardly conclusive, but it is suggestive, and it shows that economic growth, stock market growth, budget deficits, unemployment, and inflation all tend to be better under Democrats.

Daily Kos; it's single-handedly saving a sense of solidarity in what's become an often bitter blogspace over the Democratic nomination.
