2003 Koufax Award Finalists Best Series

There are eight finalists for the 2003 Koufax Award for Best Series

Ted Barlow, formerly at his own site and now at Crooked Timber has been nominated for his series of light bulb jokes. The light bulb warehouse is here.

Busy, Busy, Busy by Elton Beard for his Shorter Series. I do not link to any specific post because you can just go to the site and begin reading.

Calpundit by Kevin Drum for his coverage of the Valerie Plame story.

Mark Kleiman is nominated for his series of Valerie Plame posts both on his own site and on Open Source Politics.

Making Light byTeresa Nielsen Hayden for her series on the missing or destroyed Iraqi Antiquities. That series consists of seven posts, Loss, Reading comprehension and other problems, And this is evidence of ..., Why it's a bad idea to burn old libraries,
Excellent good news
, Recursive museum updates, and Baghdad museum: corrected corrections re-corrected.

Off the Kuff by Charles Kuffner for his exhaustive coverage of the Texas redistricting saga.

Orcinus by David Neiwert for his series Rush, Newspeak and Facism. That series can also be located at Cursor and in pdf ($5 donation requested) here.

Talking Points Memo by Josh Marshall for his coverage of the Valerie Plame matter (search for “Valerie Plame” at the link).

Please vote for one finalist by comment or email.

Posted by: Lynn at January 24, 2004 08:10 PM

Wow, 3 folks on Valerie? As much as I like Josh, his lack of comments and sidebar, in my mind, makes his barely qualify as a blog, so I'm ruling him out for that lack of community. And elsewhere, I read and immensely enjoyed each and everyone of the others, immensely.

Aside from all that, I think the Plame story ranks highest in political importance, sorta like Watergate in the Seventies.

And even without the mentioned bias against Josh's, I believe Kevin and Mark provided better coverage, even though Josh was closer to the players with a press pass, to boot.

My vote goes to Mark, though, not just as a colleague but because I honestly think he edged out the others in the quality of his work.

Wow, 3 folks on Valerie?

[grumble mode]

Just imagine how you'd feel if you'd beaten all of them in spotting the "ignorance defense" (first noted here) the WH has been floating, not to mention the likelihood that someone in the WH has turned against the leakers (most recently discussed here), why few journalists aside from the WaPo have followed the story, the WH's inability to say when Dubya knew about the leak, and how the use of Plame's maiden name shows malicious intent on the part of the original leaker.

They've all done excellent work, of course, and you could make a good case that their writing has been more elegant than mine on the subject, but still ...

[/grumble mode]

Oh, yeah, my vote: Busy, Busy, Busy.

Posted by: Swopa at January 25, 2004 01:01 PM

Although the other stories are and were very well done, David Neiwert's 'Rush, Newspeak and Fascism' was overwhelming and convincing. It's what drew me to his site and keeps me there for daily updates. The series was so incredibly well done that I keep those posts cached at all times for constant reference. Hopefully this series will get more recognition and exposure as a result of this nomination.

Again, good going Dave!

Well, Busy, Busy, Busy's "Shorter X" is for me the equivalent of political haiku or, for those of you old enough to remember Li'l Abner in its prime, Ecstasy Sauce (which involved distilling the wonderfulness of an entire Hammus alabammus down into a single drop of pure flavor). So, despite the work that David Neiwert deserves full credit for, my first-place vote goes to Beard.

I read all these and I think they're terrific choices, but I have to go with Kuffner, because you really didn't need to go anywhere else to know everything you needed to know about the whole redistricting mess, and Making Light, because for a week or so the comments on those posts turned into one of the most interesting communities on the web.

The Plame story is huge, but all three nominees have done excellent work on it -- a classic vote-splitting scenario, in that eliminating any one of them would still leave the story very well covered.

As a result, the incredible work Charles Kuffner has done covering the Texas Land Grab gets my vote: Remove him from the picture, and the story gets nowhere near the amount of attention it would deserve.
