A new Hatteras island born?

This morning, I pulled up this image at the NY Times. On the lower portion of the photo is the town of Hatteras, at the top, the village of Frisco, where we just returned from vacation earlier this month. Both used to be on the same barrier island, Hatteras. Now, they are separated by a newly formed inlet connecting the Atlantic to Pamlico Sound.

According to CNN, nearly 4000 people decided to remain on the Outer Banks during the storm, and urban search teams have been sent in, as many building apparently collapsed. If you were thinking of a place to send any extra cash this month, the American Red Cross' Disaster Relief fund has been completely depleted and in need of help.

I don't suspect we'll be returning to Frisco in three weeks as we'd planned.
