Well, it took a bit longer than I predicted, but new unemployment claims are climbing again:
In the week ending Aug. 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 413,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 398,000. The 4-week moving average was 401,500, an increase of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of 397,250.
This could just be a blip, but I suspect that it's more serious than that, particularly since claims have been hovering just below the magic 400K number for weeks now.
Tomorrow, August's unemployment numbers come out.
